False, your future brother in law has it in for non OP orders, lol

This is what I am beginning to think...

And how do you know, out of curiosity? Have you met them or did you call them and say "Hey, out of curiosity, are you allowed to be having this conversation right now?"

No, I've never asked one. You should pick up the phone and ask, it's a simple yes and no question and would take a second.

You mean... call them? I do believe that is off the table until further notice. I can already tell by the feeling in my stomach that "simple yes and no question" will take a lot longer than a second...

Thank you both very much. I should mention I'm not interested in teaching Orders. Being a teacher just doesn't appeal to me, unfortunately. The first Community I ever saw was the Benedictine Monks in Atchison. My sister goes to that college, in fact. I really wanted to be called to them because they're so close, but alas, teaching is not for me.

I should also mention distance is of no problem to me. I'm not picky on which state or which country it is in. I am very inclined to the British Isles, particularly Ireland and Scotland, though I love England as well.

It would certainly be possible to join a monastery whose main work is teaching, but never teach yourself. You could be a groundskeeper, a housekeeper, cook, tailor, bookkeeper, beekeeper, or whatever.

Benedictine monasteries (USA):
1. Swiss-American - http://www.osb.org/swissam/catalog.html (lists each monastery; most have websites under the address)
2. American Cassinese - http://www.osb.org/amcass/directory.html (ditto)
3. English Congregation - http://www.benedictines.org.uk/abbeys/index.htm (not all monasteries are in England)
4. Trappist monasteries: http://www.ocso.org/index.php?option=com_mtree&Itemid=88&lang=en (anywhere in the world)

That's a start.

Here's a very brief mention of the Cistercians (Common Observance) and Cistercians of the Strict Observance (Trappists), along with a couple of websites for further exploration.

"Many folks may already know that there are actually two orders that are known as Cistercians: the Order of Citeaux (Common Observance) and the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance a.k.a. Trappists. If we took two monks from the two Orders, most will probably not be able to tell the difference just by looking at them. Perhaps it can be described as looking at identical twins - you cannot tell them apart but the twins know exactly who they are.
Recently, the monks of New Clairvaux [Trappists in Vina, CA] were graced by the visit of Dom Mauro-Giuseppe Lepori, the Abbot General of the Order of Citeaux. He was actually making his rounds of visits which included the Cistercian monasteries of Chau Son in Sacramento and St. Joseph monastery in Lucerne Valley south of Barstow. Since New Clairvaux's fraternal ties to the monks of Chau Son Sacramento go way back, it seemed fitting to have their Abbot General come on the 3-hour drive up to Vina, to address the monastic community, break bread and preside over the Eucharistic liturgy, and join us for our noon meal. Dom Mauro-Giuseppe is originally a monk of Hauterive Abbey in Switzerland but was elected last year to serve the office of Abbot General.
The monks of New Clairvaux wish to thank Dom Mauro and our brothers of the Order of Citeaux for the mutual support and friendship. Please, visit our brothers of the Order of Citeaux online at the following:

The website for the New Clairvaux Trappists is: http://www.newclairvaux.org/index.html. It has a good deal of information, including a blog.
