(CNSNews.com) - The Archdiocese of New York, headed by Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., headed by Cardinal Donald Wuerl, the University of Notre Dame, and 40 other Catholic dioceses and organizations around the country announced on Monday that they are suing the Obama administration for violating their freedom of religion, which is guaranteed by the First Amendment to the Constitution.

Good on them. A little surprised to see ND among them, though.

I'm not surprised by Notre Dame - the school is "more" Catholic than it gets credit for, its alumni base is very upset over this, and the school stands to pay over a million annually in fines by not complying.

razzle dazzle. While I think the Affordable Healthcare Act has done a lot of good (30 million previously uninsured now getting insurance and no more exclusions based on pre-existing conditions is amesome), this move at least shows the government the church is serious.

I wish the church would sue the government and let them know how much they oppose poverty and other social ills as well.

LPS: It's my understanding that you can't sue someone/an organization to let them know something. You only sue based on violations of legal standards. However, based on Cardinal Dolan's comments on CBS this morning, the lawsuits are likely written to show the church's concern for that in a way, LPS.

The mandate could prevent the Church from participating in its ministries (adoption centers, programs to reduce human trafficking) because they have non-Catholic employees or clients. It would be futile for the Church to sue the Administration to let them know that we oppose poverty; only our actions can show that. This mandate could make the Church choose between violating a tenet of the faith- the dignity of each human person- or neglecting our social responsibility, which is another extremely important tenet of the faith. Hopefully these lawsuits manage to demonstrate that clearly.

Disappointed (but not shocked) that no Florida groups are on there.
