Gay Marriages

I do not see why the Catholic Church is opposed to Gay Unions. I understand that "marriage" is between a man and a woman, but civil unions are something completely different. Why all this hate going around? It seems like things are being complicated more than they should be.

I suppose I am not qualified to give a definitive opinion as I live in Australia and so am not sure of the situation in the USA. My reading of the news suggests that it is not a question of civil unions to protect the civil rights of gay people but a question of marriage as it has been understood in Judeo Christian countries.
