Summit Dominicans' Fall Newsletter Is Out

The Summit Dominicans have just released their fall newsletter, which summarizes some of the most important events for them in the past few months.

The most exciting news for me was that Sister Deepa will be clothed as a novice Oct. 2!!! In the spring, the Summit Dominican blog published a vocation video from Sister Deepa (which is worth watching if you didn't watch it at the time). At that time Sister Deepa still had $10,000 of debts to pay before she could re-enter the Summit Dominicans. God provided, and more. Between money raised from selling all her possessions (except some precious books--something I totally understand!) and some very generous gifts from donors, Sister Deepa was able to raise more than the amount she needed and entered on June 14. For all of you who are raising money for your own entrances, it is a very inspiring story of faith, prayer, the generosity of others, and trusting God even when he didn't always seem like he was there.

The Summit Web site is www.nunsopsummit.org. To read the newsletter, go to "Blog" and a link to the newsletter is the first Blog post. (Note: I am deliberately not giving you the direct link to upload the newsletter because I am hoping that some of you will discover the Summit Dominican Blog for the first time. During all those months when I didn't post on Phatmass, the first thing I did each morning was to read the Summit Dominicans' Blog. The joyful faith and life of prayer of the Summit Dominicans helps me start my day with my mind in the right direction.)

I can't talk about the Summit Dominicans without mentioning their soaps. They are wonderful! My current favorite is "Mary's Mantle." When I'm feeling low, and I take a shower using Mary's Mantle soap--or just wash my hands with it, somehow I can feel Mary covering me with her mantle and I feel better. A little Dominican "aromatherapy."

Not to mention that the soap department helps support the life of the nuns. The nuns don't make a big deal of the life of simple poverty they live--they simply live that way. If you look at the section of the Web site titled "Monastery Needs," you see that they have a gorgeous exern chapel (built many years ago), that takes a lot of upkeep--sometimes more than other times--especially after storms! Although the extern chapel is large, the part of the monastery where the nuns live is small and simple. (Not that I've ever been there--I've only seen pictures posted on the Web site.)

The Summit nuns have recently begun to offer a simple wooden rosary for the bargain price of $10. I like its monastic simplicity, and it would be an appropriate gift for either a man or a woman. The only reason I haven't bought one is that I have seven (yes, seven!) rosaries, most of which were made for me by Phatmasser Laetitia Crucis (now Sister Mary Catherine) before she entered the Domininican Sisters of St. Joseph in Lymington, England. To own seven rosaries does not mean I'm a better Christian--in fact, they visibly remind me of my failings on the days when I don't say the Rosary! (I'm trying, but most weeks the best I do is to say the Rosary two or three times.)

One more thing--In case you are interested in watching Sister Deepa's vocation video, here is the direct link
http://nunsopsummit..../2012/05/page/4. Until I looked for the Blog post, I hadn't realized that the Blog post was made in May 2012. Sister Deepa raised the $10,000 she needed in a little over a month! (Note: When you open the link, the Blog post about Sister Deepa is not the first item, so keep scrolling down.)

Their blog stopped coming to my reader, so I thought it was discontinued. Thanks for including that link. It's so exciting to see the new sisters! Thanks be to God for his generosity.

Their blog is now merged with their website: see: http://nunsopsummit.org/blog

Now it's Word Press instead of blogger.
