Lil Red Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 I'm interested in teaching spanish to my kids...i have formation in spanish pronunciations, so i figure i could at least teach some basics. anyone know of any programs that help?
cmaD2006 Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 You know what may help a bit? See if you can get Sesame Street in spanish ... Plaza Sesamo (I think that's what it is called in Spanish). Depending on the age of the kids, it may help lots. The show (as you probably know) does numbers and letters and words and the like ... and would probably help them start. I know it was one of the shows that helped me start to pick up english when at home we only spoke spanish, so I can only assume that the same occurs if they start watching it in spanish. There are a number of (not crazy) kid shows in spanish ... for example, I saw the Jetsons and the Flintstones in spanish (in Puerto Rico, I think). There are also things like Discovery Channel and Nat Geo in spanish. You'd have to see if your cable provider at least gives you access to those shows on your computer. I do not recommend watching the spanish language channels such as Telemundo (well maybe Telemundo kids -- but you need to check the programming out) or Univision. They can get whacked (i.e. show some stuff that I don't agree with, especially during the news, and the telenovelas you may as well tune out). Hope this helps -- I was trying to think of interesting ways to get basic spanish in without a program . You'll probably still need something but at least this will help reinforce the learning.
Lil Red Posted September 10, 2012 Author Posted September 10, 2012 thanks, cmaria! i think there might be Sesame Street in Spanish through Amazon Prime for free (we don't have netflix), so I'll check on that.
cmaD2006 Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 And I just watched a movie called "El Gran Milagro" that talks about the Miracle of the Mass. Some of the references come from the mystics, but it is an animated movie. Once your kids get some spanish in I highly recommend it. If you want I can send you the details of what the story was about. It is a Mexican made movie. I can't find an english version (or a version with subtitles). I got it via a spanish-language Catholic bookstore, and it was recommended to me (ha-and assigned as a penance) by my s.d.
ruso Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 Sesame Street videos, is free. http://www.antena3.com/megatrix/barrio-sesamo-monstruos-supersanos/capitulos/ In youtube has a lot of stuff in Spanish.
4588686 Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 Have them watch telemundo. Beat them until they understand what they are watching.

Ed Normile Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 Take them to Taco Bell so they have the basic knowledge of food names. Then when they are older get them summer jobs in the lawn care profession and they will pick up tons of spanish. ed

Why would you even say something like that??? First off taco bell smells of elderberries. Secondly, thats actually racist.
Amppax Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 (edited) I think this thread should be renamed "Teaching kids to Spanish" Mainly, because that's how I read the title. Edited September 11, 2012 by Amppax

Mercy me Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 You could do it the way my parents taught me. Move to a Spanish speaking country. For a time Spanish was my first language and English my second. My Cuban friends still can't believe it when they catch me speaking unaccented Argentine Spanish when I am the phone with our Argentine vendors. That said, I highly recommend putting them in a situation that they have no choice but to learn it, whether it is a play date or something more structured. TV is good as long as it is a clean show.

I thought I heard somewhere from a Spanish speaker that she had never heard of a burrito before coming to the U.S.
