Altar Relic Stones.

We were talking about these in History class the other day. My prof said that in most churches there is a stone inlaid in the altar containing relics, and that is what the priest kisses during Mass.

I did a little research, but am wondering - do most churches contain these stones? Did Vatican II change any regulations regarding altar stones? Are they necessary for celebrating Mass?

Pretty interesting stuff. Thanks in advance. Blessings!

302. The practice of placing relics of Saints, even those not Martyrs, under the altar to be dedicated is fittingly retained. Care should be taken, however, to ensure the authenticity of such relics.
