Here is my Cookie Base:

4 cups flour

1 Cup Melted Butter

2 Teaspoons Baking Soda

1 Tablespoon Vanilla Extract

2 Cups Sugar

1/4 Cup Molasses (for extra colour) (Optional)

2 Eggs

Then, if I am making Chocolate Chip cookies, I add 2 cups of chocolate chips; if I am making Peanut Butter cookies I add 2 cups of Peanut Butter; If I am making oatmeal cookies, I add 2 cups of oatmeal and an extra half cup of butter. If I am making Ginger Snaps, I add an extra cup of flour and 1/4 cup of ginger. I think you get the picture from there! I won't put in the molasses if I will ruin the look of the cookie, so no molasses with Peanut Butter, Oatmeal or Coconut Cookies, for example.

yield: 4 dozen cookies

I did go, and stayed for the Vigil mass. It was beautiful and prayerful. It appears to only be open during Mass times but thata ok. I am back in Saskatoon now after a long flight  I will be meeting with the director of the retreat center tomorrow afternoon. I will have a clearer idea of my options then.

well my meeting got cancelled today.  Holy Cross would like me to wait for a year. So I have to find something to do with myself for the next year.  I have contacted a few retreat centers in chicago area about live in volunteering and so maybe something will pop.  im back in canada now but i do have a valid green card so i can work on either side of the border. all my worldly possessions fit into two suitcases, a carryon bag, and a comouter carrying bag. i dont need much in the way of money so i could do volunteer work in exchange for room and board.  I will see what i can come up with.

In case you get stuck/need other options, Marytown has a one year volunteer program for men, http://www.marytown.com/UserFiles/File/The%20Franciscan%20Way%20Program%20print.pdf  I do not believe you have to be discerning with them, or even Franciscans, though that would be the spirituality there.  I know someone who did this and found it very helpful. He is with the Franciscans of the Immaculate now :like:

One good thing about this whole mess is that I spent yesterday with my grandmother. It was her 97th birthday. many relatives came over and we had a little party in the senior's home she lives in. She has bad arthritis, diabetes, uses a walker but is in good health other than that.  She is stubborn enough to make it well past 100. 

 

I am in a motel room in Yorkton right now. An aunt is putting me up for a couple weeks as her condo is full.  So I will be spending Christmas will family.. I hope nobody got me any Christmas presents. There really isn't anything I need and besides I like the fact that all my worldly possessions fit in two suitcases, a carry on bag and a computer bag.

 

I did have one very funny thing happen to me. My cousin explained to one of the residents that our grandmother is 97 today. The resident then wished me happy birthday. My cousin and I both looked at each other and laughed. I guess this means that I look 97 years old!

Staretz, you've been on my mind lately, and I hoped that everything was going well.  It seems evident that the Lord is looking for your trust and has sent you around another bend in the road less traveled.  You have my prayers that this one leads to the destination he has marked out for you as the final one..

One thing both the superior of St Mary's and the Prior of Holy Cross mentioned is that I might actually be being called to a place that i don't even know exists yet. it was only after my return that I discovered the whole world of live-in volunteering. I wonder how that would all work out. Besides which, going from a live in volunteer situation back to a monastic situation would be less of a change. I have had a nibble from the retreat center in Minnesota but not from the place in Massacheusetts. Then again it is New Year's Day tomorrow

 

I had a great time with family during Christmas. The best part was the times I spent with my grandmother. My old high school is now an assisted living residence and an aunt of mine is living there. It was nice to see her too. I also saw an old friend from highschool for the first time since grad in 1981.

I have given up on the two communities I mentioned earlier. I contacted LAMP in Bronx and spoke to someone there for a few minutes.  She will be mailing me a packet of information and an application. My thanks to the two who responded to my PM of questions.

 

The director of the retreat center and i still have to get together to discuss how they want the new website done. But they still want me to do it I can have it ready in less  than a week. 

 

In the meantime I continue my prayer practice. I know I am called somewhere. Maybe I am wrong about having a contemplative calling in the first place. After all, I am a good listener and have been a "starets" to several people over the years, including a former VS person who is now in religious life.

I received a packet of information and an application for the LAMP Missionaries today. I will be filling it out and popping it in the mail for Monday.  If they like what they see, they will ask me to come down for a few days and see the mission sites. If things work out, maybe I can just ask to stay and not return to Canada. After all, all my worldly possessions fit into two suitcases, a carry on bag, a computer bag and a shoulder bag.
