3...............The Image of My Substance

_____________________________________________

1

In that immense love
Proceeding from the two
The Father spoke words
of great affection to the Son /
Words of such profound delight
That no one understood them;

....................John of the Cross, Romances, 2:1-2a

2

They were meant for the Son
And He alone rejoiced in them /
What He heard
Was this:
My Son, only your
Company contents Me,

....................John of the Cross, Romances, 2:2b-3

3

And when something pleases Me
I love that thing in You; /
He who resembles You most
Satisfies Me most.

....................John of the Cross, Romances, 2:4a

4

And he who is like You in nothing
Will find nothing in Me. /
I am pleased with You alone
O life of My life!

....................John of the Cross, Romances, 2:4a-5b

5

You are the light of My light
You are My wisdom
The image of My substance
In Whom I am well pleased. /
My Son, I will give Myself
To him who loves You.

...................John of the Cross, Romances, 2:6-7a

6

And I will love him
With the same love I have for You /
Because he has loved
You Whom I love so.

...................John of the Cross, Romances, 2:7b

7

My Son, I wish to give You
A bride who will love You
Because of You she will deserve
To share our company, /
And eat bread at Our table,
The same bread I eat.

...................John of the Cross, Romances, 3:1-2a

8

And the more love is one /
The more it is love.

...................John of the Cross, Romances, 3:2b

9

The desert and the parched land will exult; /
... they will bloom with abundant flowers,
and rejoice with joyful song.

...................Isaiah 35:1a, 2a

10

The glory of Lebanon will be given to them,
and the splendor of Carmel and Sharon; /
They will see the glory of the LORD,
the splendor of our God.

...................Isaiah 35:2b

A Virtue to develop for today: Courage

John the Baptist had the courage to do what God asked of him.
He radically followed his prophetic call:
"The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness,
Prepare ye the way of the Lord,
make straight in the desert a highway for our God."
May John help us to be faithful witnesses for Jesus during Advent.

A practical way to work on these virtues….

* Spend a few moments in the company of St. John and his cousin, Jesus.
* Think of a way that you can 'preach' Jesus within the next day or so as you live your ordinary life
* Follow St. Francis' advice: "Preach Christ in all things; when necessary use words."

A FUN VIDEO TO WATCH:

In honor of St. John the Baptist (2nd Sunday of Advent) .....

"Comfort Ye My People" and "Every Valley Shall Be Exaulted"

A bit of trivia:

Did you know....

that St. John of the Cross was born June 24, 1542 --

Solemnity of the Birthday of St. John the Baptist?

Or that he was named after St. John the Baptist?

Now you do!
