I am sure egos are involved in the division, but it cannot be reduced to that alone.  There are real theological differences between the two sides, and those differences are not solved by pretending that they do not exist.

What do you think would happen if both Churches reunited tomorrow?

 

The Pope, all Ecumenical Patriarchs of the Orthodox Churches, and at least one metropolitan representing every region and rite of the Catholic Church would convene in Constantinople (not Instanbul) to con-celebrate what would be called, officially, the Slam-Bang Divine Liturgy.

 

Do you think it would solve more problems or cause more problems?

 

I'm sure it would cause a lot more problems, especially if it happened tomorrow. Or in the next week/year/decade. In peacetime, perhaps given another two or three decades all the theological stuff could be worked out to allow for reconciliation. In wartime (i.e. the For Real Anti-Christ arises, Baptists become Catholic in droves after realizing the Rapture didn't happen, etc.) then it would happen a whole lot quicker. Nothing like a common enemy to bring people together :)
