Wow, that bishop.   :getaclue:  :wall:

Tiny Therese, I agree... I'd have gone after him with my frying pan!   But I am sure he meant well  [roll eyes]

And we need to remember it was over a hundred years ago.... and in Mexico.  Not sure whether it WOULD have been 'seemly' for a lay woman to have run a hospital by herself.   We forget that until Florence Nightingale, doing hospital work was considered a VERY low kind of work... lower than being a servant.   So maybe we can give the archbishop a little more... wiggle room.

And in looking over the post on Mother Luisita... I didn't give you the right link for the letters!   The 'Spiritual Writings' including the letters are available on the same website -- and they've upgraded them to include the code!!!!!!!   The ones after the mid 1920's are the ones to which I was referring....

So, here you go!!!

Here's a sample from one of them From March 22, 1930:

"Regarding the invitation you received from Clotilde to go to Ocotlan

(for the sisters to work in the city of Ocotlan), that would also be fine

with me, taking into consideration of course, that my father

(Archbishop Francisco Orozco y Jimenez, Archbishop of

Guadalajara) consents. At the same time, however, it isn't enough

that Clotilde invite you. Her father (the local pastor) should do the

inviting. How can you go to someone else's house if the owner of

the house isn’t inviting you? That’s not possible. Therefore, it’s

necessary for Mr. Solorzano to get in touch with me. Write to

Clotilde telling her that.

I’m recommending a girl named Carmela to you. I think her last

name is Garcia. She’s such a good girl. I hope she arranges

everything very soon to go to the boarding house (novitiate) to be

with Manuelita (Mother Manuela of the Immaculate Conception

Rodriguez Ortega). Call her and tell her she needs to go to see my

Uncle Lorenzo (Monsignor Lorenzo Altamirano, Vicar of Religious in

Guadalajara) and tell Manuelita to get everything ready.

(A different Archbishop, by the way!)
