We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

BarbTherese Posted October 29, 2023 Author Posted October 29, 2023 The above image is that of a Missionary Sister of St Columban who do not wear veils. I have a copy here of the original constitution of St Teresa of Avila for Carmel. Something leapt out as I read. St Teresa is talking about our Blessed Mother "whose habit I unworthily wear". To me, the scapular and rosary are sacramentals marked by Our Lady as hers. The Carmelite religious habit has a scapular but not a rosary as part of the habit. If religious are going to discard their habits, then why cannot lay people take them up before they hit the back pages of history and are forgotten? I do think one reason lay women are not permitted the religious habit is the stance of a male hierarchy. If you are in religious life, your superior will keep you in line ideally. Hence rarely probably the Bishop's worry. Lay people do not have the very close supervision of a religious superior. The fear is that lay women might say or do the wrong thing and identified easily as Catholic by the habit they wear. Our hierarchy need to look in their own ranks for shockingly serious saying and doing the wrong thing. It does not mean that the hierarchy, clericals, need to be abolished. The religious habit is a powerful sacramental almost as powerful as community. Why can't a lay woman who follows a particular spirituality take up the religious habit of that spirituality? A priest religious theologian lecturing at a seminary told me that I was a new type of religious sister though my choice was and is to not be embraced by consecrated life. Rather by a distinction called dedicated life. Wear the habit, but not the veil. That marks the woman as laity. Although in my own case, I do not feel worthy of the habit, which is why I am seeking standard wear that does not look like a religious habit.
