I know a seminary in Canada which requires the same thing.  It use to be that being "illegitimate" was an impediment to ordination - and I'd assume the religious life as well.  It might have to do with the community itself - some old communities didn't want anyone with a reputation that could be scandalous - and that would include being born out of wedlock. It might just be an administration thing.

One website of a religious community I was perusing had a "get-to-know-you" form. And I recall seeing a similar question. As to their intentions, I don't know...it could be an impediment or they are looking at an aspirant's background in order to better understand their emotional & psychological make-up.

That used to be an issue for women who wanted to enter the convent, pre-Vatican II. Please make sure that community is in line with the modern Church. Rose

I've known several of these sisters, and they are inline with the church, and have a very good relationship with the local bishop in my diocese.  I'd actually say they are probably a bit too Vatican II for some of the people on this board. ;)
