Figured, I think I joined around the time you really stopped posting, and FP and AL joined well after that.

Here's a really BA picture one of my karate instructors who's known me since I began karate when I was 4 made for me. "Shodan" means "First Man", which means I'm a first degree black belt.

Today I celebrate the birth and life of Miles. This day October 6, 2014 he is 18 yrs old. I have been honored to watch him come up in the Dojo and grow into a man of honor. May G-d continue to direct His path for you and you seek His Wisdom.
Bows and Blessings

段 (dan / duan) does not really translate to man. At least under any contexts of which I am aware.

But happy birthday anyway. :| I have given you the gift of knowledge.

You're a black belt, too?! How did I miss this?! Very cool! My husband is a black belt (tang soo do), and our almost-4-year-old just started karate!

I've been doing Goju since I was 4. I got my black belt two years ago, but it was what's called a "Shodan-Ho" rather than Shodan, which basically means it wasn't a full black belt because I wasn't 18. Today I automatically became a full black belt.

I'm pretty sure I read in a book somewhere that it translates into "Man", but I could be wrong.

As you know, there are a lot of karate myths with zero basis in reality. Especially with English sources.
