Nunsuch Posted April 25, 2015 Posted April 25, 2015 The Handmaids are a rapidly dwindling congregation. Fourteen years ago, this article appeared in the NY Times, and then there were only 23 members, with an average age of 72. http://www.nytimes.com/2001/10/13/nyregion/dwindling-numbers-constant-faith-mostly-black-order-nuns-harlem-celebrates-85.html The website linked above has not been updated since about 2009, when Pope Benedict XVI was still pontiff. So I'm not sure if the group described there was ever formed, or if it is viable. A dear friend and colleague of mine attended their nursery school when he was a young child, and loves this community very much. His own mother is good friends with the Handmaids and volunteers with them. But I don't think they are going to be with us much longer as a congregation....
Nunsuch Posted April 25, 2015 Posted April 25, 2015 The principal website for the community is now apparently "on the marketplace." http://ww2.franciscanhandmaidsofmary.org/?folio=9POR7JU99
