Sojourner Posted June 22, 2004 Posted June 22, 2004 OK, so one of my friends is a huge Rush fan, and for MONTHS he has been sending me lyrics of their songs every day in the hopes that I'll be a Rush convert and start listening to them. Now, I have to say I appreciate the poetry of the lyrics, and I can admire the musicianship, but I CANNOT STAND Geddy Lee's voice. I'd rather listen to nails on a chalkboard. (Although it has mellowed somewhat with age and I'm ok with some of the more recent stuff). So tell me what you think!
Lil Red Posted June 22, 2004 Posted June 22, 2004     i'm the same way with Macy Gray - I cannot STAND her voice.
Aloysius Posted June 22, 2004 Posted June 22, 2004 don't mind me, i'm just the crazy right-wing guy that wandered in here cause he thought you were talking about rush limba never heard of this band, though
Sojourner Posted June 22, 2004 Author Posted June 22, 2004
don't mind me, i'm just the crazy right-wing guy that wandered in here cause he thought you were talking about rush limba never heard of this band, though
ha ha ... Rush the band has been around for 30-some years. If I remember right, I'm pretty sure Kilroy is a fan. I'm going to refrain from comment about Rush Limbaugh, though ...
master_alterserver Posted June 22, 2004 Posted June 22, 2004 definently a fantastic band but they have a couple of questionable themes
Lounge Daddy Posted June 22, 2004 Posted June 22, 2004 man... i thought this was about Rush the man - not Rush the band
voiciblanche Posted June 22, 2004 Posted June 22, 2004 I know who Rush is. But I've never really heard any of their songs. So honestly I have no opinion. So I went with the Who?

voiciblanche Posted June 22, 2004 Posted June 22, 2004 I just heard about them the other day... the local eighties (and some seventies and nineties and "today") rock station is giving away some tickets to a Rush concert, I think.
Kilroy the Ninja Posted June 22, 2004 Posted June 22, 2004 I am by far the biggest Rush fan on this site. Period. I have all their albums (yeah, that's right ALBUMS), cd's, videos and have been going to every concert (sometimes twice) since 1985. That's right, for the last 19 years of their 30 year existance. And this weekend will be no exception. I have had my Rush tickets for Saturday's concert for well over two months. They've been in my purse, near my person for the last month. I have all the concert shirts and programs for the last 19 years. I have books written by members of the band. I even have their solo projects on cd. I was even in a Rush cover band in high school. (Yeah, I was a band geek, wanna make something of it?) Rush is by far my most favorite band. Followed closely by Oingo Boingo (that's Danny Elfman's old band for you young'uns. Think Batman movie, Spiderman music...any Tim Burton film soundtrack...) But yes, Neil Peart, by far the best drummer on the face of the planet, is an awesome lyricist. Alex Lifeson is an awesome guitarist and (I'm told), makes an excellent mixed drink, and while many people don't appreciate Geddy Lee's voice (which has definately mellowed in his older years ... no more sounding like vice grips are attatched to, well, private parts), he is still a brilliant bassist and keyboardist. I have always appreciated Rush for a number of reasons: 1) They're songs are not all about sex, drugs and rock and roll. They have themes to their music and for the most part, they talk about life issues. 2) They have never dressed up in women's clothes or worn makeup (at least on stage) or had some sort of "hook" to get people interested in their music. 3) They're songs are almost always technically perfect. The talent they exhibit in executing the pieces they write (which are usually techinical musical nightmares) leaves the initiated speechless. But you might have to be a band geek to understand. I have yet to meet Rush. On the flip-side, I have met Oingo Boingo and they were some truly cool cats. I'm trying to win backstage passes for this saturday, here in Houston, but it's not looking good. But I'll be happy with my rain or shine show, even if I have to sit in the pouring rain. (I saw Pink Floyd in the pouring rain, and I rank that concert as one of, if not the best, concerts I've ever been to). I went and saw Rush when I was 7 & 1/2 months pregnant with the Baby Ninja Crusader (who, btw is a big fan of them also). Nothing more funny than a large pregnant woman bouncing around screaming her lungs out at a Rush concert. (Probably nothing more disturbing too come to think of it...) But I am a huge fan of them. Believe it!
Sojourner Posted June 22, 2004 Author Posted June 22, 2004 Kilroy, you rock. I aspire to be just like you someday.
nikkan_hanil Posted June 22, 2004 Posted June 22, 2004 (edited) I thought you meant the song "Rush" by Leessang. Edit: Yeah right. Edited June 22, 2004 by nikkan_hanil
crusader1234 Posted June 22, 2004 Posted June 22, 2004 I like Rush, but they arent 'the greatest' in my books so i just gave them the second one even though the singing doesnt bother me
Norseman82 Posted June 23, 2004 Posted June 23, 2004
don't mind me, i'm just the crazy right-wing guy that wandered in here cause he thought you were talking about rush limba never heard of this band, though
I knew someone was going to make that mistake! I can't believe how many people have never heard of Rush! I agree with master_alterserver, though:
definently a fantastic band but they have a couple of questionable themes
Sojourner Posted June 23, 2004 Author Posted June 23, 2004 I haven't really listened to them enough to know what questionable themes they've got ... can either of you elaborate?
jasJis Posted June 23, 2004 Posted June 23, 2004 Since I was born before 1961, I know RUSH the band. They are fantastic, and the voice does not bother me. His voice is actually typical of the era. Great band, great music, good lyrics, the voice doesn't bug me, but I wouldn't call them the greates band ever. Now the Doobie Brothers....?
