What is Freedom?

This Sunday, we heard St. Paul's exhortation, "For freedom Christ has set us free; stand fast therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery." (Galatians 5:1).  Don't you just love that verse, how true It is? We have been "delivered from the kingdom of darkness," like he says elsewhere, and "brought into the kingdom of light."  And so we should walk in the light, as children of God. If we been set free from the power of sin and death, we shouldn't go back to commit sin, to return to slavery to evil,  like St. Peter says, quoting Proverbs, "like a dog going back to its own vomit."  If we have been set free, we need to ensure that we remain free, to appreciate what Christ has done for us. Anyway, so this can be applied in all realms of society...

Many people, including St.John Paul the Great, remind us that freedom is not the ability to do whatever we want, but it is the ability to do what we ought.  What are we going to do with our freedom? It doesn't just exist so we can just sit back and binge watch Netflix while gorging on pizza. Soldiers don't give their lives so that we can have hotdogs and fireworks. Didn't sacrifice their lives so that we don't have to.

Anyway, that's all I got right now. Anyone else care to share? What is freedom? Your thoughts?

Freedom is freedom from this world--so the more we partake in earthly things, the less we are free. Lets not become slaves to this world!!! (full disclosure: I fail every day at this)

Very true… Freedom from the world, from earthly things, is freedom to pray, study, think of the things of God, and to work for his glory. So, basically we're talking about avoiding things that are distracting us from that? Not that we retreat altogether, we who are laypeople, from the world, right? Like how would you explain the balance?
