M.SIGGA Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004 (edited)
I am concerned about the double standard, though. I know organists, music directors and other people in church ministries who have been removed from their jobs because they are openly homosexual. Why should Dan Schutte be any different?
Well he's not a priest anymore. How can the songs of a single santioned priest be thrown out when a large number of our hymns are actually protestant - esp. written during moments in history when protestants really really didn't like Catholics. Today we sing them because there has been some sort of reconciliation and a movement for ecumenism - which I actually sort of agree with reservations - this is why I don't think the argument works. Did he write Eagle's Wings? Edited July 11, 2004 by M.SIGGA
jmjtina Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004 Pray for the man. We all have our temptations and shortcomings.
Thomas Michael Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004 I don't have that bad habit of leaving right after Communion anymore... but if the communion hymn is "Here I Am Lord", I'm sorry, I'm bailin'.

Norseman82 Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004
"'Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go Lord if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart.'
Personally, I've never made the connection between this song and the "intrinsic disorders" rights movement, but if the author REALLY took the words "I will go Lord if you lead me" he would realize that the Lord would lead people OUT of homosexual lifestyles, not into them. Another thing: since Schutte is/was in the Jesuits, would the royalties go to him personally or to the Jesuits?
ryanmeyersmusic Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004 depends on when he wrote the song and who owns the copyright
Lil Red Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004 i'm getting "pionono" who is new, confused with "Pio Nono" who is a Church Scholar. At first I was a little freaked out, but now that I know who's who, well, it's still confusing. BTW, I love "Here I Am, Lord".
shelly_freak Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004 I wanted to cry when I read this thread! How awful that just becouse God made this man gay people want to take his music out of church. Yes having a partner as a gay person is wrong but it is still no reason to have this hate for him. There are so many other people who have done such worse things yet we don't condem them. This is really a personal problem between him and God, he is sinning but how many of us sin also. I say the one without sin can throw the first stone! This topic really makes me sad, I thought we were supposed to be loving and accepting!
qfnol31 Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004 Many people here just don't like his music, nothing against him. Do you really think God made him gay? I don't hate him.

qfnol31 Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004 What happened to Gregorian chants and Latin hymns that we never use anymore. Only occasionally does my choir (once a month) sing good Latin hymns.
pionono Posted July 11, 2004 Author Posted July 11, 2004 norseman, I don't think he is a Jesuit anymore so royalties go to him. He is no longer affiliated with the order. ryanmyersmusic, Thanks for that list. Saves me the trouble of having to look them up. What a list!! sigga, The protestant songs should be thrown on the fire right next to Schutte's stuff. And he is no longer a sanctioned priest. He left the Jesuits.
shelly_freak Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004 I do truly believe God made him gay. As I like to say there's a reason for everything i hate when i have defend gay/lesbians in the past and because of it been called a lesbian, i just feel very stringly that these people are really no different than you and I. one of my pest friends is gay but that doesn't make him a bad person.
Mickey's_Girl Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004
He is gay. His music is gay.
I'm a new convert, so I can't speak to the quality of the man's music (I don't know any of it), but I was wondering: How can music "be gay"? Lyrics can promote/celebrate/accept homosexuality...but if the lyrics aren't doing that, I don't see how we can call the song "gay". Sinful people can still produce worthy works of praise to God. Look at King David: adulterer and murderer, among other things, but he was still considered to be a "man after God's own heart". And his Psalms are in the Bible. Living a homosexual lifestyle is a sin; I don't debate that. But the fact that Schutte lives one now does not automatically negate all of the music he's ever written. Thy Geekdom Come Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004
What happened to Gregorian chants and Latin hymns that we never use anymore. Only occasionally does my choir (once a month) sing good Latin hymns.
I would personally like to see a greater use of our rich Latin tradition...I mean...my parish doesn't do ANY Latin...it's disappointing... I'd want it to be like the EWTN Mass...Kyrie (which is Greek), Gloria, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei. The Domine Non Sum Dignus and the Ite would also be nice, but of course, these are just my preferences.

immaculata Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004 "gay" has become an adjective to describe anything that's uncool or.... whoooooooahhhh it's raining outside......... sorry, back on topic. "Gay" is the all-purpose insult now. Personally, I like to be a little more creative. Schutte, Haugan and Haas get way more credit than they deserve. Some of their songs could be classified as "cruel and unusual punishment."
Thy Geekdom Come Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004 LOL I like their tunes, but their lyrics are lacking.
immaculata Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004 I wouldn't mind if we were rid of these songs.. especially the ones in bold.. Blest Be The Lord City Of God Come To The River Glory And Praise To Our God Glory In The Cross Glory To God Here I Am, Lord I Cry To You Join In The Dance Let Us Go To The Altar Like The Deer Mass Of God's Promise My Soul Thirsts Only This I Want River Of Glory Send Us Your Spirit Servant Song *gags* Sing A New Song Sing, O Sing This Is The Day Though The Mountains May Fall You Are Near
cathgirl Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004 I  You are near. It's my favorite Church song... *hides in corner*
