The Church didn't inflict hurt on anyone, and the Church wasn't cold, and the Church has always understood and still understands Truth better than you or I do.  Also, the Church hasn't changed on this point.  Merely the laws regarding burial.

The Church's position hasn't changed on any of these things.  Only the peoples' perceptions of the Church's position have changed.  And there are many more heretics now who seek to obscure legitimate Church teaching.
