Is it vain if a man were to shave his facial hair, put gel in his hair, and etc? ...thats the context I met it in. Both want to look good in public, not a bunch of rags.

Looking good in the hopes of attracting someone, and I mean a personal effort to look better than usual, is usually a thing that only really affects you, not the other person, so it's not a valid reason. A woman should like you for who you are, not what you look like. The idea that our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit only goes so far. I think looking presentable for the occasion is good enough for the Holy Spirit, because anything in excess past that point would be vain. God bless, Mikey

I have yet to have a woman come up to me to say that she is dumping a better looking guy for me simply because he is a fornicating bum and I am not.
reelguy227 Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 Whats so bad about making myself look good ,if I should meet my future spouse ,I dont want to look ugly .And no matter what you say its looks that attract someone first , you dont go up to a girl/guy and ask them for their phone number just because of their personality ,you dont even know them at that point .Im not making myself look good to look in the mirror and say "oh ,you are so good looking ricky " ,thats vanity.

But rest assured, I do not think too highly of myself. My life gives credit to God, especially through the medical complications I've been through. If you read my earlier posts, the main reason I want to work out is not to simply attract females, but to be in-shape, be strong, feel and look better. I also stated that a woman should first be attracted to a man's characteristics and personality, not just his looks (and that goes for men too). Though I have an interesting question... Question: If a wife wanted her husband to workout and get some muscle (and he agrees to it), would that be vanity? Afterall, it would be a gift to her. Or what if the husband wanted his wife to exercise more (and she agrees to it), would that be vanity?

But would you marry someone who was a model but had horrible morals and personality? I have no problem with someone trying to make him/herself pretty for his/her girl friend or boy friend (or spouse). The thing is, you cannot expect to just use your body to attract the perfect Catholic girl. A good girl will want to have a man who has a great personality and morals. No one is saying that a person has to be ugly to [b]not[/b] be in vain, it's that if you obsess over your body as if it was the best thing in the entire universe, then thats vanity. Thats silly expectation society puts on you, it's not a valid point. Looking prestentable is fine. I don't see the need for more, excess is vain, and so thats the basis for my arguement. A person knows when they are acting in excess. Due to it's subjectivity this form of vanity is hardly mortal, but all sins should be avoided. God bless, Mikey
