Patriotic Songs In Mass

Look, I have a softness in my heart for the Confederates (minus the slavery issue), but I'm not reading too deep into the song. It's one of the only ones we have that mentions God.

There are times when its just plain appropriate to have Patriotic songs at Mass. On the year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks there were a lot of patriotic hymns ( God bless America and America the Beautiful come to mind).. It just seemed so.. right at the time and I dont doubt that it was.

There was a nice little prayer vigil outside after the Mass too, was really touching .

even then we only do one and its the exit song that no one even sings anyways! LOL

Do people at your parish actually sing the other songs at Mass?

yeah their usually songs they already know the words to and don't need the book..... lol

and alot of traditional songs.....lots of purdy ones

I agree.

It seems like such a strange concept to me and totally inappropriate in Mass no matter what day it is. I looked up the lyrics to God bless America and America the Beautiful and 90% of the lines are about how great America is. The rest are sort of incidentally asking for God's blessing that it can continue to be so wonderful. I really don't see how that can ever replace a hymn, which should be focussed on [b]God[/b], not some country.

Mass is on a different plane from national holidays.

Until now, I though they only sang patriotic songs in Church in places like the former Soviet Union, People's Republic of China and the like....it seems I was wrong.

Oh yes. patriotic songs are sung in US churches and they sing patriotic songs in churches in Canada, too. Quit worrying about offending people already. When I was in Canada for Canada Day and they sang patriotic songs, that is cool because that is how it is. God gave the world a beautiful gift in Canada, celebrate it. Who am to be offended? And by the way I sang along as well. I have heard patriotic music sung around the world in many churches. If you are offened by a people singing their patriotic music (that also glorifies God) then I think that you should not travel.

PS I learned a very cool patriotic song in South Africa that had a Christian tone to it. I can't think of the words right now but I remember that it was beautiful. I thought that it was a my honor to learn it and join in singing it.

[/quote]Wiat, I think you're refering to the new South African Anthem...I must though say that we never sing in church, in fact the only place its ever sung is before sport matches.

I find it rather ironic that a goverment who advocates and supports abortion , gay rights & marriage, Robert Mugabe (and a host of other trasicties) would ask God's blessing in its national anthem.

I can't remember what it was called! I know that it was not the national anthem. No it was not sung in church but it was patriot and did speak of god. It was not out of line with Christian teaching as I heard it. I would know it if I heard it.

While beautiful, and even at times during the year more appropriate than other times, the Church lives outside of the age, location, and peoples it happens to reside in. While God gave us a gift in each of our countries, nationalism has very little room in a universal Church. On the other hand, the Church is made of many parts, different parts, that make up the whole.

Traditionally, the Church is the place of patriotism and the old order (not the Old Order (of kings and the likes, although, I'd think the Church does stand for kings and the likes, but that isn't the issue) so it would make sense then to have some patriotic affiliation when it can't be find anywhere else, but I hardly think thats the case in the US.
