The Speaker of the House is from Illinois, but the last one was from Georgia . . . the President pro tem of the Senate is from Alaska, but the ones before that were from West Virginia (which is still southern, despite having taken advantage of Virginia's preoccupation with armed invaders to secede), South Carolina, and Mississippi.
