Ways To Annoy A Yankee
As the recent unpleasantness, also known as the War of Northern Aggression, was fought principally on the hallowed soil of the Grand and Glorious Commonwealth of Virginia, the birthplace of the Declaration of Independence, the Statute for Religious Freedom, and the Mother of Presidents . . . we do sometimes react less civilly than others when the topic comes up . . .

Who did you say lost the war? The President of these United States is from Texas. The Vice President is from one of the western territories. The Speaker of the House is from Illinois, but the last one was from Georgia . . . the President pro tem of the Senate is from Alaska, but the ones before that were from West Virginia (which is still southern, despite having taken advantage of Virginia's preoccupation with armed invaders to secede), South Carolina, and Mississippi.

Just because we let you Northerners think you have a voice . . . don't be fixing to rewrite history . . . if you get too big for your britches, we'll just have to confine you to your side of the Mason Dixon line

Just kidding . . . well, maybe
What I don't understand is when people p&m about who is running this country and why it is going to H*** in a hand basket and then they blame the northeast politicians.
More presidents came from the south than the North. And the above quote gives you an idea who is runniong the country at present.

The fact that you have to be southern to win a national office is still new enough to many to come as a surprise . . . JFK had a Texan on the ticket in '60; LBJ won in '64; Nixon had Agnew (even though Maryland is "technically" northern - most people don't think of it as such); Jimmy Carter from Georgia; Reagan had Bush Sr as VP; Clinton (back when Arkansas was home) and Gore; and now Dubya

Part of the confusion may come from the fact the broadcast network media is centered in the NE (and just as the politicians in DC have trouble seeing beond the beltway, so do they have trouble seeing outside the NYC limits)

It's not a matter of political party (but that may also lead to the perception that the NE is to blame, when the Democrats put up a "national" spokesman, they often come from the NE (Kerry the candidate; Ted Kennedy, the elder statesman; I've lost track, but weren't about half the Democratic presidential hopefuls from the NE?)

Going back to election night and all the red and blue states . . . it is true that the country as a whole voted Republican . . . but the President (our only "national" elected office) doesn't make the budget (he can break it . . . but that's another thread entirely) . . . one reason so many feel the country is being carried off in a handbasket held by the NE is because the liberal political leaders (primarily the Senate, I think without any statistical backup) are from urban NE areas

NYC elected Mrs. Clinton as Senator for the whole state of New York - when the national population shifts a little more, so that all the great heartland states are virtually bereft of population, the electoral votes are gong to finally match up with the "pure" democratic ideal (counting noses is not what the framers intended - they thought that little better than anarchy - but that's another thread also) because four electoral votes from 30 states with small populations are not going to be able to outnumber the electoral votes of the 20 states with all the population . . . and then domestic politics is going to get very ugly.

I'm sorry, I am such a :nerd:

Since yankees have a barely perceptible sense of humor, it is hard to have fun and irritate them at the same time :hide:

Lessee, we already talked about y'all and pop (aka ARCEE and CoCola) . . . did anyone mention sweet tea

I think I remember someone mentioned grits (with melted coagulated milk is my favorite, but butter and cinnamon (or honey) works too)

Usually, it's the totally unexpected that irritates them - something so commonplace you don't even realize how alien it is to their expectations

Well in a way all Americans were labeled "Yanks" (and still are by foreigners). It wasn't till around the Civil War era that the term Yankee only refered to the Northernors.
