Totus Tuus Posted January 10, 2005 Posted January 10, 2005 (edited) Well, I really like these habits:http://olamshrine.com/olam/communityphoto_printable.htm Since this is the order I'm looking into most right now, I'll go with Franciscan, since they're Poor Clares. Here's some information on what the Poor Clare habit symbolizes:
The habit is an exterior sign of our commitment and total consecration to Jesus Christ. Each part of the holy habit, even its colors, has deep spiritual meaning. Underneath the white veil, the nun wears a white head covering. This is a symbol that her mind is not on "the world" but on the Kingdom that is to come. No part of her mind, intellect, memory, or will is to be part of the world, part of darkness, or part of anything that is contrary to Jesus Christ. The white collar is a symbol that the nun is surrounded with "community", the religious life lived in common. She wishes to live in goodness, in love, and in poverty of mind and heart. She puts at the very top of her body, which is consecrated to God, something white as a constant reminder that she is a temple of the Holy Spirit. That temple must be ever clean and pure. All the white parts of her habit are a symbol of her desire to exemplify the awesome purity of God Himself in the Most Holy Eucharist. The earthly color of the brown Franciscan habit reminds the nun of the Scripture passage used on Ash Wednesday: "Remember thou art dust and to dust thou shalt return". It also is a remembrance for her that - without Him - she is absolutely nothing. The white Franciscan cord, with three knots in it, symbolizes the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience that this new novice hopes to make at her first holy profession. Over the habit is placed a brown mantle, which is worn at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. It is a symbol of the nun's love for Our Lady and also of the Blessed Virgin Mary's maternal protection. ForHimAlone Posted January 29, 2005 Posted January 29, 2005 Anyone know the meaning behind the black and white of the Cistercian habit? I've been trying to find it, but I'm having difficulties. I'm very interested in this order!
Susan Posted January 29, 2005 Posted January 29, 2005 Most mediaevil orders choose white for 2 reasons; poverty, so a natural fabric such as wool would be white...except not so white as we think now! Also, white was used to symbolize purity and for the monastic orders, white is also the sign of a new baptism. Profession is an intensification of one's baptismal promises. The black for cistercians is probably because for benedicitines the scapular is more an "apron" unlike the Dominicans for whom the scapular IS the habit and it is blessed. Also, black is for penance. Hope this helps!
Totus Tuus Posted January 29, 2005 Posted January 29, 2005 I don't know if you read what I posted about the PCPA's and their habits, but they use white on the inside of the veil to symbolize purity and heaven, and black on the outside to symbolize the world and sin (I think). God bless.
ForHimAlone Posted January 29, 2005 Posted January 29, 2005 OK, I thought it was something along those lines. I'm currently reading a book on the History of Habits, and it's just fascinating! I'm really feeling pulled toward a Cistercian monastery right now, so I just wanted to see if anyone had any knowledge about the meaning of the habit.
Susan Posted January 30, 2005 Posted January 30, 2005 Elizabeth Kuhns who wrote the book THE HABIT is a friend of mine!

bookin'it Posted February 2, 2005 Posted February 2, 2005
Anyone know the meaning behind the black and white of the Cistercian habit? I've been trying to find it, but I'm having difficulties. bookin'it Posted February 2, 2005 Posted February 2, 2005 Did a little more research and found that the white habit is worn as a novice and then after profession of solemn vows the Prioress clothes the sister with the cuculla (choir robe) and black veil, signs of her Solemn Consecration to God. She is then crowned with a wreath of white flowers.
argent_paladin Posted February 2, 2005 Posted February 2, 2005 The Dominican habit (for men) has changed a bit since the thirteenth century. The scapular and capuce were once one piece. Now they are two. Also, the rosary didn't become required until a revision in the constitution around 1902. Here's a pic of me in my habit: You can see why I think the men's habit is the best there is. The cape (cappa) is awesome and it is very versitile. But the black and white is very eyecatching. And of course, having a rosary at your side and a scapular given to the Order by Mary herself is a blessing.
Piccoli Fiori JMJ Posted February 6, 2005 Posted February 6, 2005 I'm still deciding! I'm between Franciscan and Carmelite... hmmm...
Susan Posted February 6, 2005 Posted February 6, 2005 I think the Friars began wearing the Rosary around the 1500's. Did you know that as the early friars began lengthening their capuce, St. Dominic was NOT happy with their vanity! Still, they won! This is why the friars have a cape to their capuce and the nuns don't wear a cape. Everyone thinks that the nuns are not wearing the cape because they modified their habit. Not true. The Dominican Habit is the best...
Piccoli Fiori JMJ Posted February 6, 2005 Posted February 6, 2005 I went with the Franciscan Habit because of it's orginal intention: Poverty and Penenance... I'm a big fan of both...
ofpheritup Posted July 9, 2005 Posted July 9, 2005 There is a new order called the Children of Mary in Ohio. The habit is purple and white.
