StColette Posted October 13, 2004 Posted October 13, 2004 what the GIRM is saying is that a Crucifix must be present meaning that an image of the resurrected Christ can not replace a Crucifix.
phatcatholic Posted October 13, 2004 Posted October 13, 2004 i guess i'm not used to reading documents on the liturgy and understanding that a statement for something is also indirectly a statement against something else
D0RK4JP2 Posted October 13, 2004 Posted October 13, 2004 Yeh, ain't a bad question to some people these days. I know of at least three churches in my diocese that has it Jesus like that.
Theoketos Posted October 13, 2004 Posted October 13, 2004 ^Holy Saint Michael that is an awesome sig... Anyway, Nick about the statement being only positive but contrary This requires of the faithful a spirit of obdiance and humility, while still allowing for artistic input. After all, a picture of the resurected Christ in a Church would still be approperiate, but it is clear in the GIRM that the Cruxifix is still necessary and not to be replaced. Here is a good time to note that Ortodox Liturgy reflects Orthodox Theology and vice versus. A right understanding of God with lead to a right praise of God.
p0lar_bear Posted October 14, 2004 Posted October 14, 2004 Actually, I don't believe that it is, strictly speaking, prohibited. A crucifix is required to be near the altar during the Mass, but that can be the processional cross (which must be a crucifix). A large resurrection cross on the wall isn't exactly encouraged, but it is allowed.

[/quote] A resurrection crucifix has nothing to do with Christology because Christ did not rise off the cross. i had no idea such a thing could ever be allowed . how could it be? It's like having a picture of St Peter being crucified the right way up when that didn't ever happen. Furthermore, to have a resurrection crucifix is a contradiction of terms because you can't be crucified and resurrecting at the same time. I'm baffled that it is permissable to have it Could you please provide source material? JMJ.
p0lar_bear Posted October 14, 2004 Posted October 14, 2004 Basically, a large wall crucifix is not required. Other artwork and images can be used on the wall behind the altar (a chapel I went to today had a picture of the Madonna and Child where a Crucifix would be in a lot of Churches, and the chapel is quite old, so it isn't part of any new innovations). The fact that you don't like the Resurrection Cross doesn't mean it isn't allowed. You may argue against whether it is good or not, but the fact remains that it isn't prohibited.
toledo_jesus Posted October 14, 2004 Posted October 14, 2004 A crucifix is required. An image of the resurrected Christ can't be used in place of Christ on the Cross, for it was this Sacrifice that we commemorate in Mass. In my home parish, we have a processional crucifix that can be flipped to show an image of the resurrected Christ. It's wood, and while the craftsmanship is good I find it distracting and misleading. but hey, there's a lot wrong with my parish...
p0lar_bear Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 A crucifix is required, but a wall crucifix is not. The processional cross (which must be a crucifix) is sufficient for the crucifix required at Mass.

miche11e Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 Yep that's me! I actaully looked at your photo in your profile and I thought you looked familiar. Ben is planning on going to sydney and I'd like Josh (who was also at 04) and Nathan to go as well, I most likely won't make it as baby #12 is due 1/1. We have yet to work out transport etc which will be made more complicated by the fact that we are actually on holidays at the beach until that weekend. Anyway where there's a will theres a way (especially when God's on your side) Michelle
