Guest Legion Posted October 9, 2003 Posted October 9, 2003 I'm a cradle Catholic, and never changed. Never thought about the question until at a youth group mtg. the question was asked. I was in my early to mid 20's at the time, and the answers were: My parents are, I was born Catholic, I was raised this way, etc., etc.. I thought about it and decided, that wasn't a good enough answer. It took me awhile to decide why I was Catholic, and this is my reason: "Historically, it can be traced to Jesus." Huge revelation I know, but it was at the time. Since that time I have indulged myself into the mysteries of the Church. Simple, yet complete. I like to know your reasons. FAITH, HOPE, LOVE
Mary's Knight, La Posted October 9, 2003 Posted October 9, 2003 (edited) I was raised in the Catholic church though I wasn't taught well so I hesitate to claim that I *was* catholic. but then Servants With A Task held a retreat where God changed my heart but then it was still a long journey which involved college and falling away due to lack of discipline and coming back because I could feel it missing and cuz of the efforts of the lovely young lady who is now my fiance. :D Edited October 9, 2003 by Mary's Knight, La
littleflower+JMJ Posted October 9, 2003 Posted October 9, 2003 my parents are catholic. my grandparents were catholic. and even before then they were all catholic. thus i was raised catholic. but thats not why i am what i am. its becuase i've had to decide for myself what was truth. i thank God that my family and parents put that foundation of truth that i knew for myself that The Catholic CHurch was the One True Church. the decision was easy, i've never doubted my faith and religion. even though i was raised catholic i also made that decision for myself to be catholic. and i've always been. and thats why im catholic.
willguy Posted October 9, 2003 Posted October 9, 2003 (different name, but basically same story as ya'll)
Dave Posted October 9, 2003 Posted October 9, 2003 Why am I Catholic, you ask? Because back when I wasn't, I came to realize the Catholic faith is total truth. Simple as that.
Aloysius Posted October 9, 2003 Posted October 9, 2003 because God blessed me immensly to be born into a family which baptized me in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy SPirit and did a certain miracle in memory of Him every sunday, and taught me to be sorry for my sins and to humble myself to confess them to a servant and representitive of Him who would forgive me, and confirmed me to receive the gifts of the spirit in confirmation. the story of my life in a nutshell B) (well, the IMPORTANT parts, at least)
BLAZEr Posted October 9, 2003 Posted October 9, 2003 I am Catholic because Jesus Christ is Lord! I am Catholic becuase Jesus Christ said "If you eat my Flesh and Drink my blood you will have life in you." I am Catholic because I love my Mama! I am Catholic because I fall silent when I try to think of anything more perfect, more true, more holy, more universal, and more true than Holy Mother Church! (and JP2 is why I remained Catholic even in my doubts!)
notbilln Posted October 9, 2003 Posted October 9, 2003 Why Am I Catholic? Hmm... Well to be frankley honest my parents are sorta catholic. My dad converted the year I was born, but honestly it wasn't anything they really lived. Church was just something we did on sunday, and religeon was just somethign they told us children to put up with ,because they said so. And for that reason I hated relgeous education. As a contrast to my parents faith, was my grandpa. He spoke of his relationship to God. His love of Jesus, Joeseph and Mary. I later had a conversion experience on a confirmation retreat of all places. I realized that God my creator was calling me to be closer to him. He was calling me to a better life. Sicne then there have been low points ( esp in college after dealing with the newman center people) where i have examined other denominations of christianity, and other religeons altogether. I found some wonderfull things in those times of investiagtion, but i was also disturbed by what I found both in philosphy and in practice . I found that I felt much closer to god at the worst catholic mass, then at the most friendly, feel good, prodestant service. And so, I found that I'd rather put up with catholic jerks then prodistant "saints". Oh I also found catholics that weren't jerks that was just a college experience.
jessinoelw Posted October 9, 2003 Posted October 9, 2003 Short version: My husband and I converted to Catholicism in February of 2001. He was raised Jehovah's Witness (stopped practicing around age 13) and I was not raised religious. I dabble in Wicca off and on until Matthew (then boyfriend, now husband) and I became Christians the summer after high school. We went to Bible college for a year and Matt got into Church history. After looking into it a bit we converted. It was part realization that we had many misconceptions about the Catholic Church, but mostly a gift of faith from God. --Jessica
KennC Posted October 9, 2003 Posted October 9, 2003 (edited) Why Are You Catholic?, question ... by way of daily Prayer for Truth over a period of years through many lessons hard and light, God the Father led me here, ... the Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit keeps me here, ... as with St Peter, ?where would I possibly go? Peace of Christ, Ken Edited October 9, 2003 by KennC
ironmonk Posted October 9, 2003 Posted October 9, 2003 (edited) I was baptized Catholic, went to Catholic school from 6 - 8... parents didn't take me to Church... I read the bible on my own... At about 15, I said wait a minute, Jesus built One Church with Peter as it's leader... Which one is it? Then searched for that answer... low and behold, the Catholic Church was first... I learned this from unbias historians... secular books. Well, I was already Catholic so great, I just kept reading the bible.... Knew it was the Church built by Christ and no one was able to prove otherwise... but I was very ignorant of Sacred Tradition up until about 4 years ago... then I got a taste, and feasted on the Holy Word of God passed on by Trustworthy men. I can't get enough... I wish I became a priest and had what happened to me 4 years ago - happen when I was 18. I thank God for the internet. jasJis Posted October 9, 2003 Posted October 9, 2003 Because I finally said YES to God's offered gifts of grace to help me know His Love better.
PedroX Posted October 9, 2003 Posted October 9, 2003 because Protestantism just wasn't enough for me. Imagine Catholicism without the history, the ritual, the mystery and the miracles. That was my life before the gift of Grace. peace...
gunz25 Posted October 9, 2003 Posted October 9, 2003 Wow, guys...What amesome responses. I'm Catholic because, and sadly it took me until last year to truly believe this (even after Catholic education) that our God was truly present through the Eucharist. Christ being not only at Mass but in the people and experiences around me is something I long for. Seems incredibly trivial, yes. I can only say that it took me being questioned by friends who weren't Catholic to dive into studying my faith firsthand...I had to take responsibility and make a judgement on what was the Truth. By the grace of God, I am trying everyday to follow that Truth.
jmjtina Posted October 9, 2003 Posted October 9, 2003 Because I truly believe that the Fullness of Truth is in the Catholic Church. Because I LOVE THE EUCHARIST!!!!
musturde Posted October 12, 2003 Posted October 12, 2003 I'm a cradle Catholic. To me, Catholicism is the completeness of Christianity, I would never convert (I hope I'm true to my words).
cmotherofpirl Posted October 12, 2003 Posted October 12, 2003 There are only two alternatives: being a jew or an atheist. Being a jew is resigning yourself to a fallen world and trying to make the best of it. Being an atheist is a cop -out. So therefore I am Catholic. Protestantism is not an option. Its only several hundred years old, it is derivitive, not original. Anybody who has spent anytime reading the early christian writers realizes they are wonderful Catholics, and anybody reading history knows there really is only one Church. THere is no way that any institution of the face of the earth could survive 2000 years without the explicit protection of Almighty God. I really see no other logical choice.
traichuoi Posted October 12, 2003 Posted October 12, 2003 I'm Christian because Jesus Christ resurrected. I'm Catholic because of the Eucharist...the Truth.
KennC Posted October 12, 2003 Posted October 12, 2003 ... because Protestantism just wasn't enough for me. ... now here's a statement I identify with! thanks PedroX Peace of Christ, Ken
