centurio rogans Posted November 23, 2004 Posted November 23, 2004 Hello! I am interested in reading the Bible in a suitably scholarly and methodical fashion, though not necessarily in order. In English, too, though I lack Hebrew out of the three sacred languages. I have the Jersualem Study Bible and have found various online commentaries, but I'd be grateful if you would share your experience of them and say whether you thought some more profitable than others. My 'handle,' by the way, comes from Matthew 8, an intriguing and complex passage of great literary and spiritual beauty: cum autem introisset Capharnaum accessit ad eum centurio rogans eum et dicens Domine puer meus iacet in domo paralyticus et male torquetur et ait illi Iesus ego veniam et curabo eum et respondens centurio ait Domine non sum dignus ut intres sub tectum meum sed tantum dic verbo et sanabitur puer meus. I look for a suitable picture of a Roman centurion and found something different that I liked and found resonant, but it is copyright and I ought to respect that.
centurio rogans Posted November 23, 2004 Author Posted November 23, 2004 Or on other writings, by which I was thinking of Vatican documents, works of religious or divines, catechisms, encyclicals, devotional poetry, you name it. I can use Google, of course, but I am looking for things you have found useful.
phatcatholic Posted November 23, 2004 Posted November 23, 2004 when it comes to bible commentary, i find the Navarre Bible Commentary to be unparalleled. it quotes scripture immensely, as well as church documents and testimony from the early church fathers. it is the best catholic commentary on the bible i have ever read. for the best available price, go here and search for "Navarre". you can have a passage from the Navarre Commentary sent to your email on a daily basis by signing up here. also, worth noting is the Douay-Rheims Haydock Bible and the Catena Aurea or "Golden Chain" by St. Thomas Aquinas. the first two of the Gospels from the Catena Aurea can be found online here as for any other sources of reference regarding the Church, this entry from the reference section has everything you need. pax christi, phatcatholic

Rob
i don't know much about catholic software, but, regarding the Navarre Commentaries, they include the RSV-CE of the bible and the Latin translation as well. if you want the full commentary for each passage, you usually have to by the different books of the bible separately, altho there are a few collections, for example "Gospels and Acts" and "The Pentetuche" just check out the link to the navarre commentaries that i provided in my earlier post
cmotherofpirl Posted November 24, 2004 Posted November 24, 2004 I recommend you start with the Pentateuch volume of the Navarre Bible series for your winter reading. It is over 800 pages long.
