Don John of Austria Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004
Not to mention the fact that the swords weigh a freakin ton as well.
Actually a full sized 48" longsword wieghs about 3 1/2 lbs, if you are wielding one that is heavier than that it is either woefully inaccurate, or a stage weapon.
Balthazor Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004
Mine too!
It is too bad we got our butts kicked by the swedes all up until the city of Zamosc. I know a guy that makes armor, wears it and fights with it. The guy is huge he is 6'8".......
Balthazor Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004 Major forifications in Zamosc. Has a nice artillary, and weaponry museum.
spathariossa Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004
Actually a full sized 48" longsword wieghs about 3 1/2 lbs, if you are wielding one that is heavier than that it is either woefully inaccurate, or a stage weapon.
Thanks for saying that so I didn't have to. In fact, I find that most longswords even if they're up to 4 pounds, say like the svante nilsson sword that Albion produces are so well balanced that you don't notice. My main interest is the high middle ages (12th-14th centuries) so I'm a big fan of the single handed slashing swords of Oakeshott types X, Xa, XI, XII, and XIIIb. Albion's Tritonia sword is a wonderful example of a type XIIIb - massive and still only 3 pounds. (Which is quite a lot for a single hander but it is well balanced in terms of the CoB being like 5 inches from the cross.) My favorite style is probably the type Xa. Though the sword of St. Maurice (Turin not Vienna) is my favorite medieval sword of all time.
Dreamweaver Posted December 7, 2004 Posted December 7, 2004 I like swords and all, but I'm not a huge sword buff. I have a cheap half-tang katana I got for my birthday, a handmade full tang crusader-era longsword from Toledo, Spain along with some wooden wasters (practice swords). I find interesting that many have misconceptions on how much swords weighed. They're lighter than most people assume, aside from the huge two handed Landsknecht swords. I'm assuming that they weigh a bit more than 3 pounds or so. If someone would knows more about latter period warfare, please inform us. I'm not as educated in pike/sword warfare.
Don John of Austria Posted December 7, 2004 Posted December 7, 2004 A True two handed sword such as was used in the 16th and 17th century for cutting through pike formations wiegh just at 6 lbs, still less than your average stage arming sword( a single handed sword often miscalled a long sword).
Kilroy the Ninja Posted December 8, 2004 Posted December 8, 2004 bump 'cause it's stuck somewhere on the third page...
spathariossa Posted December 8, 2004 Posted December 8, 2004 So what is your favorite sword based on Oakeshott's typology? I like the Xa the best.
Don John of Austria Posted December 8, 2004 Posted December 8, 2004 type XIIIa and type XX for those of you who don't know what we are refering to here is a link to a brief discription of oakeshots typology.here
toledo_jesus Posted December 8, 2004 Author Posted December 8, 2004 ooh the type XII and XIIa are nice.
spathariossa Posted December 9, 2004 Posted December 9, 2004 (edited) I have to admit though, X's and XI's are really pretty. I love brazil nut pommels. If I could just get a brazil nut pommeled, sword with a downcurved guard and a type Xa blade I'd be set. Aw, heck, I just want the sword of St. Maurice (Turin version). I want the Vienna version too but the Turin version just makes me love it. It is so big and ugly in a delightful way. Don John of Austria Posted December 9, 2004 Posted December 9, 2004 Yeah I like XIIa, I personally like war swords mor than arming swords, not thaqt a good s ingle handed sword isn't capable of massive damage I just perfer a later cut and thrst for single handed work.
I've held some type XV's and such. They are without a doubt good weapons as are type XIX's and XX's. However, I just find the high middle ages mail cleaving weapons to be my favorites. Though the Type XIIIa and b are spectacular.
