drewmeister2 Posted December 3, 2004 Posted December 3, 2004 I have a question about the saint differences between the Eastern Catholic and Orthodox Churches. It looks like there are some differences in the Saints commemorated on certain days. For the Eastern Catholics, today's commemoration is: "Commemoration of the Holy Prophet Sophonias" In the Orthodox Church: Zephaniah the Prophet Our Righteous Father John, Bishop and Hesychast Holy Martyrs Agapius and Seleucius Theodore, Archbishop of Alexandria Does it appear to anyone else that there are some obvious differences? I have found three Eastern Catholic sites that give the same saints, and two Orthodox sites that give the same saints for their Church. Thanks!

[/quote] St. Sophonias is the biblical prophet Zephaniah. Sophonias is simply the Greek rendering of the Hebrew name Zephaniah. God bless, Todd
drewmeister2 Posted December 4, 2004 Author Posted December 4, 2004 Thanks, Todd! But what about the added saints that the Orthodox have? Are they also formally commemorated today in the Eastern Catholic Church?
Apotheoun Posted December 4, 2004 Posted December 4, 2004 Below is a link to the major feasts of the Byzantine rite, but just as there are particular feasts for different Churches in the Roman calendar, so too in the Byzantine calendar there are minor feasts (equivalent to memorials or optional memorials in the Roman calendar) on the same day as major feasts, and in such cases the major feast takes precedence. There also can be differences between the various rites within the Catholic Church at the level of particular feasts; in other words, there can be particular feasts or memorials that are only celebrated in one particular rite. This is no doubt the case as well between the Eastern Catholics and the Eastern Orthodox, and even between the various autocephalous Orthodox Churches.
