Guest banana18 Posted October 14, 2003 Posted October 14, 2003 I just want to say that I like a lot of things on this site and I know that "phat" means "cool" to most people, but it originally means (and still does to a LOT of people) "Pretty Hips And Thighs" I say find a new name for the site, since the Mass should NOT be associated with that kind of stuff. The name of this site has already caused scandal to a couple people that I know, since they knew the real meaning of the word "phat". Take a stand for Christ and keep the message clean and unconfusing! In Christ, Banana girl

In Christ, Banana girl i disagree. i've already encountered all that (it being disrespectful) when wearing my phatmass shirt. and even on another catholic website forum. but after explaining and making sure the other person fully knows what it means, there are no problems. its a matter of understanding the meaning of it. its not disrespectful at all. I'm sure I could come up with quite a few acronyms for the word "pope" too that would be disrespectful. If you look at dictionary.com's definition, it's: phat - adj. Slang phat·ter, phat·test Excellent; first-rate: phat fashion; a phat rapper What type of documentation do you have that states that the origin of the word means "pretty hips and thighs"? Also, what type of scandal has this caused your friends? After hearing of that acronym, how did it effect their actions or thoughts regarding the Church? God bless.

But, it's too late. phatmass is staying, and no matter what people say "phat" means, it's only used in one context around here. Kinda like xxxchurch.com It's a Christian based website devoted to helping people with pornography addictions. They have "xxx" in their name! Judge us by our fruits. ;)

I honestly never knew "PHAT" meant "Pretty Hips And Thighs" -- when I first saw this site I immediately understood the meaning that Mass is GREAT!

Lil Red Posted October 14, 2003 Posted October 14, 2003 When I first heard the word "Phat" it was in a movie with Chris Tucker and he used it describing a woman, "Pretty Hot and Tempting" I gotta admit, I still think of phatmass in this way. It's hot and tempting people to Christ. I like it! :)

Such respellings are common in slang. (Kidd is a prime example ) And fat has a long history of meaning rich, abundant, or desirable. Fat has been used this way in English since the early 17th century, and in other languages for far longer. Jazz musicians used the term to describe musical sounds, as in the fullness of a tone or note forming into the goodness or the high quality of a sound. Equivalent to "that was good" The specific sexual connotation of phat is likely just a specialization of the general meaning. Some suggest it may be a clipping of emphatic. Again, there is no evidence for this last, but at least it's more plausible than any of the acronymic origins. Phat is also older than you might think. It has been a staple of African American slang since at least 1963 There is no support for the Acronym. phat adj 1. very good, excellent; COOL. ("That's a phat bike.") 2. attractive. Note: an acronym, "pretty hot and tempting," has been invented for the word. The acronym came after the original coining of the term.
