spathariossa Posted December 10, 2004 Posted December 10, 2004 Is it possible to pray for your own death? I don't mean this in the sense that my death be painless, blameless, and a good defence before the judgement of God but rather that it just be imminent.
Laudate_Dominum Posted December 10, 2004 Posted December 10, 2004 There is no need, your death is already imminent. One might pray to die soon or something of the sort, but this might be ungrateful since life is a gift and the greatest opportunity to love and glorify God. I've read of saints praying to die rather than offend God, this can be good if it is truly an expression of hating sin to the point of wanting to die rather than sin. I've also heard of saints wanting to die because they so longed to be with God in heaven, but in the cases that come to mind this desire was checked by abandonment to God's will and the acknowledgment of the value of life. Even in the Scriptures saint Paul says something along these lines, that he would rather be in heaven with Christ but it is better for those he was addressing that he remain because it is God's will that he be an apostle of Jesus Christ, etc. I hope I've at least sort of answered your question.
