Questions you can't answer

Recommended Posts

Posted

I did a lot of reading and studying when I converted, and I've kept it up since then, but still from time to time I get questions I have no idea how to answer ...

Sometimes it just makes me feel dumb ... but for the most part I just say, "Hmm, I never thought about it that way, let me look that up and get back to you with a better answer."

Anyone else deal with this??

Everyone gets this, even well-trained scholars (our seminary teachers were stumped a few times last year)...

Yeah, I still get this which is why I fall back on the fact that I know there is an answer for every question, even if it takes a while to look for it.

I don't think anyone can trully ask an un-answerable question...maybe an un-answerable question at this time...but when we meet the answer, we will know the answer.

You should not feel dumb. No matter how much you study, no matter how long, none of us is omniscient!

Yes, but I suppose I've asked a few of these questions too, so I guess it's even. :)

In the Byzantine theological tradition the ultimate unanswerable question is the mystery of God itself, because the essence of God is utterly transcendent and incomprehensible.

Did not Augustine says this as well in De Trinitatae ?

I believe that Aquinas said the same thing in Summa Contra Gentiles

No, they both understood the beatific vision as an intellectual knowledge of God's essence. The Eastern Church rejects the idea that anyone can see the essence of God; instead, Byzantine theologians hold that the beatific vision is a participation in God's uncreated energies.

God's essence is utterly incomprehensible.

Such is the teaching of St. Paul. We shall see him "as he is". We cannot fully comprehend him, of course, But the beatific vision is the vision of God "as he is", for all eternity.

Its better to ask and feel foolish for a minute, then not ask and be foolish for a lifetime.
