Where is says you have to get written permission is for something different.

Under the law, you are free to post the relevant section.

But you are not here to be helpful.

You only raise strife.

I think the original reason this thread was started, about possible other meanings to "Live by the sword, die by the sword" is interesting. Humor me for a moment - here is what I thought...

Perhaps those who live by the sword, i.e. the Scriptures, die by the Scriptures because you cannot be saved by the Bible alone. Sola Scriptura, anyone? Hmmm, I don't think I'm making sense... one's faith life cannot be centered around Scripture, it must be centered on God. Scripture is a means to an end, not the end.
I agree Bookin' it.
That is why I was careful and didnt say 'the teachings of the Bible'.

I consider Christ as the Sword of Truth, his teachings given to the Apostle's and passed down for 2000 years.
I will live happily by that Sword.

And I can only pray I will joyfully die by that same Sword.

I can see how someone standing before God will say, "But its in the Bible!"
And then him asking, "But what of those who testified of me?"

Don't bother. The editors/"scholars" involved in that work should have been silenced long before mortality enforced what the Church would not. Brown is a heretic. Plain and simple. The others (Fitzmeyer and Murphy) are nearly as bad. The book is worthless. There are many better commentaries out there.

god bless you :D

I've given up reading Bible Commentaries for the most part, too much effort to decifer whats on-target and what isnt.

Ive read a lot of peoples comments on this board and especially in reference to interpretations that dont suite their 'rigid' (to say the least) beliefs, usually say stuff like above. Anyways I find it very well written and academically sound, even if I disagree with parts, but then again I aint a brilliant scholar ;) :P

mt Brown is heretical. He does not believe the bible is accurate.
If you want to read heresy, feel free to enjoy the book.

I have some of Brown's other writings as well. I hope he went to heaven, but I really wish he had done it at a much earlier age.

Actually, this isnt the place for debating. I just saw something there and thought it relevant to share with my phamily.

It isnt dogma or doctrine, but simply an observation I had.
And it seemed to fit in line with Catholic teaching, but Im no scholar either.

Anyone is welcome to disagree, but this isnt the place for debating. Or argueing copyright laws.

I've quoted plenty from books. Those laws are there to protect the writer so I dont claim that something I posted from their work is mine. Plain and simple. We can debate the details, but if you want to do that, then do it in debate.

Anyway, out of all the posts on this thread, I think only 2 or 3 of them actually had anything to do with my original topic. And I thought I was getting better. :P

Pax.

Its not accurate, many parts are spot on, but many stories and texts are stolen and corrupted. Telling the truth is heresy? Geez tuff crowd.

Phatmasser,

Discussing discrepancies, looking at places where the original text has been corrupted, etc. are fine. The use of historical-critical methods is allowed.

However, Fr. Brown takes it too far. He makes the Scriptures a purely human work. It is a human work, but it is also divine. Fr. Brown's work tends to deny the inerrancy of Scripture and contradict solemnly defined Church teaching. Some of his very early stuff is usable, but his later stuff is questionable at best and at times out-right wrong.

I wrote a tract on Biblical inerrancy that I think addresses this (it's been a while since I read it). It can be found HERE.
Im not sure if this has been discussed here before. I dont remember seeing anything on it.

While I was praying todays Sorrowful Mystery of the Holy Rosary I was meditating strongly upon Christ in the Garden.

When the soldiers came for him and Peter, in an understandable instinct to protect his Lord and Savior, he cut off the ear of the Roman soldier.

Christ called out for him to stop and said that those who live by the sword shall die by the sword.

This got me to thinking. Christ in scripture is also called the sword of Truth, the double edge sword. His sword is from the mouth and cuts.

Are we also those who live by the sword? I saw it more profoundly than in my explanation but I think you understand my point. I apologise that I lack the eloquence of describing the moment that I experienced when I really pondered on that statement made by Our Lord, yet I definitely sensed a double meaning there.
I think for so long all I saw was that those who choose violence to solve problems would not so much die a violent death but die a death without understanding that love is the only way to solve life's problems. This may also correspond back to my above statement in living by the sword but not seeing it in its full context. It just seemed as rather a revelation to me at that moment and I had to stop in my tracks and really think about it a moment.
Whereas I though that Jesus was simply chastising Peter, as in 'NO, NO dont do that', and he of course was, He very well may have been stating an absolute more profound than what I originally thought. Often times there are undercurrents in Scripture that I often do not see.
"Those who live by the sword, shall die by the sword".
For the Saints, they did and do live by the sword. For the Martyred, they most assuredly lived and died by the sword.

Any comments?
