Fides_et_Ratio Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 So, a kid at school ripped the 14-CD Christopher West's "Crash Course of Theology of the Body" onto a 1 CD mp3 format CD (i.e., it only plays in my computer... unless I put it back into CD format). I didn't think anything of it at the time, however, now I am not so sure I should have it without paying for it. The kid did it for free, but still, it's like $50-60 bucks Christopher West is loosing out on for the 150 kids that got copies of this. BUT... there is also the slight possibility that Christopher West is one of those people that doesn't care if people rip/burn their stuff onto CDs for friends. I tried checking his site, but couldn't find anything... so, does anyone else know anything? Should I do away with the CD?
Andrea348 Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 that's been an issue that i've been struggling with. i had a bunch of downloaded music, but i've disposed of it and if i want it back i go buy the cd. it is so hard, but i feel better cuz i know i'm doing the right thing... you should definately try to see if christopher west minds though....i wouldn't know where to find the info....
DemonSlayer Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 Well, if he didn't mind, wouldn't he just offer his cds for free or a donation, etc?
Sojourner Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 OK, when I saw Christopher West speak several months ago, he encouraged people to take his materials for free -- they only had to tell him if they were so that he knew for inventory purposes. He said that it's more important to him that people get the info. Because of that experience, I've made several copies of Christopher's stuff and given it to friends. HOWEVER, in cases when people can afford it, I encourage them to do so in support of the work he does.
Fides_et_Ratio Posted December 21, 2004 Author Posted December 21, 2004 well, the kid that ripped them all into mp3 format is a good kid (an actual good FUS kid).. which is why I didn't think about it at first. I was thinking of buying the manual (it's $10)... but being a college kid, $10 is about all I can afford. Is large scale copying okay, though? (he copied it for almost everyone at the Austrian Campus)
Sojourner Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 I don't know about large-scale copying ... I'd say if you have real concerns about it, contact CW's organization and ask about it.
DemonSlayer Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 What sort of materials did Chris West tell people to take for free, he didn't say anything like that the last time he came here.
He said anything on his materials table -- books, CDs, study guides, etc. He wasn't just giving it away ... he said, if you genuinely can't afford it then you could have it.
Pio Nono Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 JMJ 12/21 - St. Peter Canisius Christopher West came and spoke at my college last February in St. Paul. One of the seminarians bought a CD of his and asked Christopher if he could burn the CD and give it away. Mr. West heartily encouraged him to do so. If his behavior then is exemplary, then I would imagine that your case is fine. If you can afford it, though, it might be generous to send him a check or something for $5 to help him in his ministry.

BLAZEr Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 Ripping a CD and distributing it to those who did not buy it is stealing, plain and simple. Why don't you email Christopher West and ask him . . . more impportantly email the company that produced it and ask them.
Fides_et_Ratio Posted December 21, 2004 Author Posted December 21, 2004 Not that this exactly changes a lot... I will e-mail Mr. West and ask (I actually sent one to the website, as I couldn't find a direct way to contact him). But the CD isn't even in the same format. It's not playable in an audio CD player... all 14CDs are on 1 CD in mp3 format. If all else fails, I will just order the course manual as I planned and send a donation after Christmas. I really like the material... it's just a matter of being able to afford the $50 the 14-CD set costs. I'll probably also ask my SD about it.
ryanmeyersmusic Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 definitely e-mail christopher and ask his permission. also, encourage the person replicating them to put a web address, etc on the cd in case someone wants to donate.
Birgitta Noel Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 The GIFT Foundation is offering West's "Naked Without Shame" 10 CD Set ONLY $3.90 each set. (Maximum 50 sets per order. However, place as many orders as you would like) Delivery Information: Your CDs should arrive within 3 weeks. They will ship within 2 business days through the United States Postal Service at the Media Mail rate. Total Product Cost: $3.90 Shipping & Handling: $3.88 So, less than $8.00 total. This is legit, I ordered my set a few days ago. Click here to Order I gathered from a TOTB listserv that this is a similar set to the 14 cd set, perhaps a bit more condensed?
Sojourner Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 It might be the first edition. The second edition is 14 CDs, but I think the first edition is 10.
DemonSlayer Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 Too bad that thing doesn't work outside of America.
