Balthazor Posted January 7, 2005 Posted January 7, 2005 After spending a day out and about in town I noticed it was "that time of the year" again...... red and pink hearts are everywhere and so are novelty boxers with shiny hearts, and stuffed animals that kiss, and hug and play "Wild THing" when squeezed. I hate it. I personally really hate the secular holiday known as Saint Valentine's Day. I really really hate it. I don't expect any of you guys to hate it with me though....this is obviously my problem. And I have several reasons for hating it which I will undoubtedly inumerate to you all if provoked. But right now I am not in a ranting mood. Anyway, if any of you have stories now is the time to warm up your typing fingers. Please tell us What are the best and worst Valentine's Days you have ever had, or why you hate Valentine's day (like me) or why you like it.
BullnaChinaShop Posted January 7, 2005 Posted January 7, 2005 I can't stand the Hallmark holiday called Valentines Day. I refuse to allow anyone to tell me what day I should or shouldn't buy my wife a card or flowers or take her out to eat. I never made any effort on Valentines day before we were married and I surely don't now.
rachael Posted January 7, 2005 Posted January 7, 2005 I hate Valentine's Day. However, last year I was feeling really bummed on Valentine's and I told some of my friends. Later that day, when I got off the bus, I saw a big balloon was attached to my mailbox and inside the mailbox was a card and a stuffed animal. I love my friends.
Andrea348 Posted January 7, 2005 Posted January 7, 2005 I have nothing but good memories of recent Valentine's Day's because the past two I have been on retreat. On the first one, we received love letters from God slipped under our door first thing in the morning  I highly recommend Valentine's retreats!!!!! Too bad Valentine's is on a Monday this year...no retreat on Valentine's day....I'll be on retreat the 11th and 12th....oh well...
BrightSunshine Posted January 31, 2005 Posted January 31, 2005 (edited) I hate St. Valentine's Day. *sigh* Maybe one day that'll change. Edited January 31, 2005 by BrightSunshine
spathariossa Posted January 31, 2005 Posted January 31, 2005 (edited) Ok everybody. Stop hating St. Valentine's Day. Just don't buy into the commercial nature of it all and instead celebrate a very cool Saint. Poor guy...everybody hates his feast day... :feels sorry for St. Valentine: Edited January 31, 2005 by spathariossa

It's like saying we should hate Christmas because of how commercialized it's become. I think we should do something alternatively special for St. Valentine's Day. Hand out St. Valentine holy cards or go to mass with your loved one, for example. We should reject the notion of the overly romantic holiday and instead strive to love everyday. As for me, this year will be the first Valentine's Day in which I have a girlfriend. We're going to do something real special. There's this good Mexican restaurant that's always pretty crowded and we figure Valentine's Day is going to be the one day of the year where Mexican restaurants will be empty. After all, who wants gas when they're trying to be romantic. I'd go to Mass that day except it's at a time when I'm at work.

This year for St. Valentine's day I'm going to hand out holy cards of St. Valentine. I'm glad you came up with it too! That tells me that it is a good idea.
StColette Posted January 31, 2005 Posted January 31, 2005 I had an article somewhere about the Origin of St. Valentine's Day, the truth behind the day, it was written by a priest and now I can't find the article lol
1337 k4th0l1x0r Posted January 31, 2005 Posted January 31, 2005 Do elementary school kids still exchange Valentine's cards or have the public schools outlawed them?

JazzforJesus Posted January 31, 2005 Posted January 31, 2005 a memory of St. Valentines day for me was two years ago when me and my girlfriend went to our church for their dance. She wasnt 16 yet (she turned 16 month later) so her mom wouldnt let her date yet. i was just hanging out with her for the past 3 weeks . before we left her mom was like this isnt a date is it. we said no we are hanging out with friends up there (we only lied about the date part). but yea that was her first kiss and all there my valentine story.. only one, still think its a rather stupid holiday cause of hallmark and the comercial industry

When I have kids, I'm going to give them St. Valentine holy card to give to their fellow students. That'll shake things up.

Balthazor Posted January 31, 2005 Author Posted January 31, 2005 That is a lovely Idea about the Holy Card. I have nothing against Saint Valentine I just do not like the holiday it has become. That and the fact I have working in a flower shop during Saint Valentine's Day......everyone comes in and wants their flowers instantly, they don't realize the work that goes into it. So this year I am going to celebrate by saying a special prayer for all the florist's out there stretched to thier limit. Most Calendar's have taken the word "Saint" out and now it is just valentine's Day. Anyway I found this if anyone has any curiousity as to the origin's of this day. The History of Saint Valentine's Day Valentine's Day started in the time of the Roman Empire. In ancient Rome, February 14th was a holiday to honor Juno. Juno was the Queen of the Roman Gods and Goddesses. The Romans also knew her as the Goddess of women and marriage. The following day, February 15th, began the Feast of Lupercalia. The lives of young boys and girls were strictly separate. However, one of the customs of the young people was name drawing. On the eve of the festival of Lupercalia the names of Roman girls were written on slips of paper and placed into jars. Each young man would draw a girl's name from the jar and would then be partners for the duration of the festival with the girl whom he chose. Sometimes the pairing of the children lasted an entire year, and often, they would fall in love and would later marry. Under the rule of Emperor Claudius II Rome was involved in many bloody and unpopular campaigns. Claudius the Cruel was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his military leagues. He believed that the reason was that roman men did not want to leave their loves or families. As a result, Claudius cancelled all marriages and engagements in Rome. The good Saint Valentine was a priest at Rome in the days of Claudius II. He and Saint Marius aided the Christian martyrs and secretly married couples, and for this kind deed Saint Valentine was apprehended and dragged before the Prefect of Rome, who condemned him to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off. He suffered martyrdom on the 14th day of February, about the year 270. At that time it was the custom in Rome, a very ancient custom, indeed, to celebrate in the month of February the Lupercalia, feasts in honor of a heathen god. On these occasions, amidst a variety of pagan ceremonies, the names of young women were placed in a box, from which they were drawn by the men as chance directed. The pastors of the early Christian Church in Rome endeavored to do away with the pagan element in these feasts by substituting the names of saints for those of maidens. And as the Lupercalia began about the middle of February, the pastors appear to have chosen Saint Valentine's Day for the celebration of this new feast. So it seems that the custom of young men choosing maidens for valentines, or saints as patrons for the coming year, arose in this way.
Thy Geekdom Come Posted January 31, 2005 Posted January 31, 2005 I've never had a St. Valentine's day while being with anybody...I suppose I'll have to wait another year.
kateri05 Posted January 31, 2005 Posted January 31, 2005 i shopped for engagement rings last valentines day  but the valentines before that, i was out of the country and the one before THAT we were "on a break." so i've determined that sometimes they stink, sometimes they don't and you just have to show your luv all year round
