G-Freak12 Posted January 13, 2005 Posted January 13, 2005 I have a question.... if someone were to tell a preist (not nessicarily me) that they are receiving a form of abuse that is hazardous to their life would they call the cops even if the person says dont call the cops?
Karinsbestfriend Posted January 13, 2005 Posted January 13, 2005 If it is in spritial direction then the priest would not be allowed to say anything.
karin Posted January 13, 2005 Posted January 13, 2005 YES he cant tell he would be like commiting a grvae sin
Karinsbestfriend Posted January 13, 2005 Posted January 13, 2005 yes, he could advise you to do something, but he is not allowed to tell anyone.
karin Posted January 13, 2005 Posted January 13, 2005 if priests were alloud to tell in spiritual direction no one would ever ever go.
G-Freak12 Posted January 13, 2005 Author Posted January 13, 2005 how do u know this?? sorry I'm really paranoid
karin Posted January 13, 2005 Posted January 13, 2005 i have asked my priest and he is not aloud to say anything
Iacobus Posted January 13, 2005 Posted January 13, 2005 I don't know how the laws apply to priests, but my parents are both teachers and if they hear a whipser of "abuse" in their offical capitiiies, they are bound to contact Social Services and the police ASAP. I am not sure if a priest is a mandoraty reporter, but I know Doctors, nurses, teachers, etc are all MRs so if you are worried about that I would find out first based on your local and state laws.
HavilyRose Posted January 13, 2005 Posted January 13, 2005 Priests, if under the seal of the Confessional, are not allowed to report anything to the authorities. Before you speak to a priest, ask him to treat the conversation as he would a Confession.
Scofizzle Posted January 13, 2005 Posted January 13, 2005 no under spiritual direction they can tell......but in confession they are bound by the seal of confession and cannot tell under any circumstances...
Dreamweaver Posted January 14, 2005 Posted January 14, 2005 The priest can't reveal the going-ons of confession, or break the seal of confession (a huge, major sin). He'd probably advise you who or where to go to get help, and strongly encourage you get the necessary and proper help. I know counselors are required by law to report abuse, does this legally apply to priests when they give spiritual direction (spiritual counseling)?
homeschoolmom Posted January 15, 2005 Posted January 15, 2005 but if you specify that you'd like to talk to him under he seal of confession, he won't tell...
Catholic_Pinoy Posted January 15, 2005 Posted January 15, 2005 We were talking about this the other day in my Catechism class. A priest can NEVER tell ANYONE what you confess to him. They can't even tell other priests what you confess. God Bless, Grant
