dairygirl4u2c Posted January 26, 2005 Posted January 26, 2005 (edited) This is just some advice to everyone who gives polls. I know I'm not the best poll giver, but I know the process that must be gone through to give a good poll. I usually just am too lazy to do the process thoroughly. Have you ever noticed how I give many polls for the same question? THat's because I mess it up. I'm here to make you realize that if you aren't messing up, then you're probably messing up. Instead of asking open ended questions like "do you support nuclear weopons", you should think through all the pros and cons of nucs and then ask more specific questions. Like, if you generally are against nukes (that's about a good assumption for most) are you still against them when other countries have them? People like the guy who said "no nukes are bad" would then have to reconsider their stance. They'd either fall victim to their old belief that nkes are bad or change or realize that the issue is much more complicated than "nukes are bad" Unless you know very little of the subject and want to see what people say, but if that is the case, you should study more first. Or if you just want to see what everyone says. That's good to see what people think of a topic.. like if you ask someone if they like coagulated milk and they go on a rant about how they hate cows.. then you know there's issues either just with that guy about cows and coagulated milk or there are more issues out there. But I think this reason is very random and usually pointless given that you should know what issues there are.. unless you want to find that person and help them? THat could be. THen there's also the fact that it's not very effectivediscourse. So unless you just want to see what people say to start dialouge wit hthem, you shoud be mor especific with your polls. I doubt most who give polls really have thought through all the ins and outs of it but yeah. Just may random ramblings for today.. discuss, debate........... Edited January 26, 2005 by dairygirl4u2c
MichaelFilo Posted January 27, 2005 Posted January 27, 2005 Cheers. Good advice, now lets all apply, scripture wasn't too clear on how to make polls, nor is the Church, so I think dairy's advice is sound. God bless, Mikey
dairygirl4u2c Posted January 28, 2005 Author Posted January 28, 2005 no dairy, you're wrong. polls should be given as soon as a thought comes into your mind. that's what God has laid down for us.
dairygirl4u2c Posted January 28, 2005 Author Posted January 28, 2005 how do you know God said that? take a point in last post and let's discuss it.
Benedict Posted January 28, 2005 Posted January 28, 2005 You just don't want to have your thread moved. I took a course in technical writing (writing instruction manuals, memorandums, mission statements, business proposals, etc.) and pretty much dairy is right on the mark . . . if you are looking for specific information. Open-ended questions give you an entirely different set of data than closed or focused questions. As well, free response questions give different information than multiple choice or ranking questions. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that the more you restrict the question, the greater the bias that can enter the poll. A short, simple, neutrally termed, open-ended question offers the least bias while a complex, multiple choice question offers the most. Even the simplest question can suffer bias from choice of words.
dairygirl4u2c Posted January 28, 2005 Author Posted January 28, 2005 it's otay... i forgive you! friends?
MichaelFilo Posted January 28, 2005 Posted January 28, 2005 I <3 the Dairy. I don't so much <3 the sig, but ok. God bless, Mikey
dairygirl4u2c Posted January 28, 2005 Author Posted January 28, 2005 i wish i would have taken that class a long time ago stead of figurin all that stuff out for myself... but more advice. when you think of an issue withint a complex array of issues, pick one issue and ask all the questions of that first. don't let your mind wander too much or you'll get lost. unless you're just getting the lay of the land.. etc etc ps. i'm glad we're friends again dairy

Kilroy the Ninja Posted January 29, 2005 Posted January 29, 2005 I'm moving this to open mic since it's not really debate material....
