It has been said that he harbored and helped Dissenters and ruined a lot of beautiful and Traditional Churches...What is the story with him?

Like a lot of people, I suspect his story is pretty complex. But the heart of some of the expressed concern is probably rooted in his perceived role as one of the liberal bishops of America.

Here are a few excerpts:

Intriguing biography/history/journalism involving authors Andrew Greeley and Eugene Kennedy - more about Greeley and Kennedy than Bernardin

If you wanted to point to two people who were most instrumental in destroying the Church in the U.S. the first would be Cardinal Jadot, the Papal delegate (we did not have a Nuncio until 1984) from 1973 - 1980. He is personally responsible for the worst bishops this county has ever seen (including the elevation of both Bernardin and Weakland to the Archbishophric). The second would be Cardinal Bernardin. His reign in Chicago can be summed up very easy by describing his funeral. He had the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Choir sing, and as pallbearers he had six freemasons. His influence and destruction are unimaginable. If you want more information I can give it. However, for the sake of my own mental and physical health I will not post any more about him right now.

LIBERALS!!!!

It is like they are infiltrating and destroying everything that is good and true.. I'm so fed up with Liberalism..Especially in the church here.

I was looking at those pics you posted of the Traditional Churches. I was in awe. Then I thought to myself "what happened to my Church"? Where did it go?I'm so dissapointed with the church in this country, I cannot believe how far they let this go.

I just don't understand how such people get into these places of power..

From my experiences, the liberals seem to speak louder and have thicker skin.

Yeah so it seems...Well one of the Priests on EWTN once said that we are coming back...The Schools, The Seminaries, Parishes...I just get depressed because it is all i see everywhere. Litrugial abuses, bad music, holding hands, clapping, so called Catholics defending democracy and attacking Rome.. Same ol' homilies about "love" from Priests who are affraid of offending those whose opinions differ from Church teaching.

Your sig scares me, MC.

I'm from Chicago and have met Cardinal Bernardin and have written to him. To me it is not a matter of liberal or conservative, I just noticed that he did not assert his authority.

Liberals and Conservatives are heretics destined to burn. Only the orthodox will survive.

While 'destined to burn' isn't quite how I'd put it, I pretty much agree.

I'm all for nice modern Churches, but the churches that Bernardin proposed to destroy were BEAUTIFUL.

It's not there anymore.

It would depend on how you define these terms.

Bernardin's devastation went far beyond just destroying Churches. HE had a scorched earth policy for every aspect of the faith.

He asserted his authority. It was just in the wrong direction.

I'm going to a latin mass for now on until i can find a Novus Ordo mass that doesnt have abuses and weird homilies. The Latin Mass im going to is still Faithful to Rome and the Holy Father...I just cant take this anymore.. I had an experience today that made me very sad. I was also called an Idiot by my Father in Law because I refused to hold hands during the Our Father. The Mosignor in his homily today decides to say "jesus dies again like 7 times a day".

It's not about Liberal vs conservative.

It's about Liberal Religion vs. Revealed Religion.

What is the Truth and do you compromise on it?

Aside from school closings, could you give some concrete examples? I'm specifically interested in public pronouncements against the faith (like your "scorched earth" comment; I can think of only one action of his that could possibly come close, and that has to do with an administrative transfer).

And as far as churches are concerned, keep in mind that he also was the one who had Opus Dei take over St. Mary of the Angels and renovate it, thus saving it from the wrecking ball. Many of the churches that were closed were in neighborhoods where the old ethnic Catholic population moved out and you had several churches that were in a few blocks of each other that basically had few people attending. And when the choice came to close one of the two high school seminaries (Quigley North or Quigley South), he preserved Quigley North, which has a beautiful gothic chapel and stained glass windows modeled on the St. Chapelle church in France.
