goldenchild17 Posted February 5, 2005 Posted February 5, 2005 Anybody seen it? I just did tonight and I thought it was very good. Did you catch that part when the old lady is falling down the side of the building but then catches her footing, and looks up, sees a statue of Mary and says thank-you? Yeah, that was pretty cool.
Specter Posted February 5, 2005 Posted February 5, 2005 I could be wrong, but I think the statue was an angel. I loved that movie. That's one of the highlights of 2004 for me. Might have been a best picture nominee if it wasn't a superhero movie..lol
IcePrincessKRS Posted February 5, 2005 Posted February 5, 2005 Yeah, I think it was an angel, actually. I recall there being wings... I love the part in the beginning where he's zipping around and the guy says "HEY! He just stole that guy's pizza!" I laughed so hard the first time I saw that part...
goldenchild17 Posted February 6, 2005 Author Posted February 6, 2005 That part when he was standing in the elevator... next to that guy... Yeah that was great Looked like something you'd put on a commercial.
Karinsbestfriend Posted February 6, 2005 Posted February 6, 2005 I think it was good, but not the best movie in the world or anything.
AndytheConqueror Posted February 6, 2005 Posted February 6, 2005 Yeah, I thought it was better than the original.
DemonSlayer Posted February 8, 2005 Posted February 8, 2005 I thought the first one was a bit better, but either way I don't remember that scene.
FranciscanRocker25 Posted February 8, 2005 Posted February 8, 2005 My brothers (both younger and older) love that movie so I get to see it a lot. I can tell you everything there is to know about Spiderman, Star Wars, Davy Crockett and Lord of the Rings. I've seen them all a bagillion times. Peace, Caroline
Specter Posted February 8, 2005 Posted February 8, 2005 I believe Spider-Man 2 to be far superior to the first one. It doesn't have to take time to build up the character, it just starts with an adventure. And FranciscanRocker, same here, but I've also read some Spider-Man comics, Star Wars books, and the Lord of the Rings books, including some of the Silmarillion.
cathqat Posted February 8, 2005 Posted February 8, 2005 I preferred the first one, but both were solid. X-2 beat the pants off both, though.
Fat Buddha Posted February 8, 2005 Posted February 8, 2005 I did not like this movie. This move was overrated. I don't think it was that much better than the first one (if any). I like Spiderman as a character, but the movies have just let me down. I had high hopes after the first movie, but the second one didn't cut it. First was the screenplay. I heard they had 3 people write the script, including some pulitzer prize winning writer and some other hot shot, but I was not impressed. Watch the one scene where Aunt May is giving her 'hero speech' to Peter. I could not believe someone honestly thought it would be inspiring. I almost walked out at that point. Animation also smells of elderberries. The first movie's was bad enough (see scene where peter parker runs across the building tops). But this one made me sick to my stomach. They had enough budget to do a good job for special effects. Just watch the fight with Doc Ock and spidey on the side of the building (when Aunt May is being held hostage). The people look fake and there is nothing moving on the street below. Not one moving person or car. I can understand they won't get close to the level of say a Gollum, but they could have done much better. I sincerely hope it does not get an oscar for visual effects. I'm an animation major and the level of quality they put in to the animation really dissapointed me. And one other thing that peeved me was the fact that there were too many scene's where extras were sneaking looks at the camera. C'mon. I don't even see that in most high school student films. This is all the griping I'll do because I'm sure I've already made a few people angry with me. I'll admit, I've only seen the movie once.I don't know if I could stomach through another viewing. I'd probably just notice more faults. Sorry if you liked it but this movie but I certainly did not. But I hear they are making a third movie and I'll look forward to that. But they seriously need to work on the storytelling and overall just attention to detail. There were too many things in this movie that just seemed to amateur. Opinions please...
Specter Posted February 8, 2005 Posted February 8, 2005 What I don't understand is why someone takes the time to write out why they didn't like something so much. Is it to get others to feel the same way? What is it? Anyway, when it comes to special effects, until you have worked on some, as I have, you don't really understand the depth of how difficult it actually is to acheive realistic looking characters. When it comes to human characters in 3D, we'll probably never get it right, or at least for a few years. The script was spot on this time around but did have a few lines that didn't work. However, it IS based on a comic book (specifically the "Spider-Man No More" issue from way back). How long ago did you see Spider-Man 2, because I've seen it at least 10 times, and not once did I notice extras looking at the camera to the extent that you make it out to be. When there are two guys fighting on a building, cars and people won't be moving below at all. The animation of the film was Motion Captured and realistic looking.
Specter Posted February 8, 2005 Posted February 8, 2005 A little something I wrote on July 1, 2004: Spider-Man 2 is quite possibly the best superhero movie that I have ever seen. The heart that went into it all, the characters, the incredible plot points, all the amazing twists and turns, the conflicted and real characters, make this movie one of the best movies of the year. This is probably the first superhero movie with the right formula to be up for an academy award. Too bad the academy might not even recognize it. The opening credits were painted by Alex Ross, and artist with a fine eye for detail. They brought back key moments from the first film, preparing us for the next big adventure. We then catch up with Spider-Man as he goes on what appears to be his normal adventures, trying to pay the bills and save lives, and finding that a balance is needed for him to survive. That by leading two lives, he's missing out on so much, and losing a lot that he needs. In the process of the film, everyone that is in Peter Parker's life is at risk, and that is done exactly right, as the comic book feels the same way. All of the characters were done really well, and Spider-Man was a spot on match with the comics. they've really outdone themselves with this installment, properly setting up the third film. But the only question is: what's going to happen next? Where does the story go from here? Well, we have a while to wait, as Spider-Man 3 may not be coming until 2007. If it's anything like this one, it's going to be absolutely fantastic. At least we've got X-Men 3 in 2006 and Batman Begins in 2005. And the DVD of Spider-Man 2. Well, there was a tangent. Anyway, the messages of the film were many, and they were more than just "With great power, comes great responsibility." They included things like self-sacrifice, and being a hero for someone, and making a sacrifice for others. That sometimes you cannot do what you want, and that's fine, you'll live. The music was also fantastic. Many of the themes were reused from the first film, but feel more fleshed out, and breathe life into this character. After the first film, the movie had a few themes, and none really stuck out. This time, all of the familiar music sets the stage, and fits the story and the characters perfectly. It may not be a theme like Star Wars or Indiana Jones or Back to the Future, but it's a layered theme that fits the conflicted character, and all of the people in his life. That makes the music right for the story. Better than the first film, fits perfectly as a follow-up, and the middle chapter of a three part story arc featuring some great villains.

It's not to get others to feel the same way, but just to get people to consider another side. So I posted my opinion. I don't like to make statements and opinions without reason so I posted reasons too. Hope that answers your first questions. I have worked on special effects and understand how difficult it is. I can appreciate what they did for Spiderman. I understand how much work and time was put into it. But I certainly do not think it was a high point for the movie. Another reason is because I thought another movie's effects were overlooked because of all the hype that surrounded Spiderman. Yes, it's a weak reason but it's true. Again this just an opinion. The script just got on my nerves. But perhaps it might make you feel better if I mention that there are many worse comic book scripts than Spidermans. (ie, Daredevil, Elektra) Anyways, just voicing a contrasting opinion. I can respect that you won't see things my way, but thanks for taking time to reply.
Specter Posted February 8, 2005 Posted February 8, 2005 Thanks for pointing out why you posted what you did also. My question stems from a frustration with people that seem to click on any topic whether they care or not, and post something either to get a rise out of someone, to get noticed or attention, and to see how people react to their statements. Your post was none of that, but I just wanted to be sure of your motives. I' I'm glad to see that our time was not wasted though. Yeah, the hype was great, but that's mainly because the first film took in an unprecedented 114 Million at the box office in it's first three days. Granted, I didn't like the first one. I thought the villain looked cheezy, and the effects were terrible. The second film, on the otherhand, I thought the villain was a marvelous contrast to the villain in the first film. http://www.decentfilms.com/reviews/spiderman2.html Check out this review from the National Catholic Register. This about sums up my feelings toward the movie.
Part of what makes Spider-Man 2 such fun is that the filmmakers aren’t afraid to kick back and enjoy themselves — to think outside the comic-book panel. A delightfully offbeat sequence somewhere in the middle of the film with a brief freeze-frame made me laugh out loud. And there’s a well-conceived appearance by Cliff Robertson as the late Uncle Ben that is neither a flashback or dream nor a paranormal event, and makes perfect sense.
Fat Buddha Posted February 8, 2005 Posted February 8, 2005 Spec~ Yeah, I should mention there I things I did like. I like the style of it, epecially with Sam Raimi in charge. The music was good as well. Yes, and the opening credits with Alex Ross' work kicked butt. Anyways, the movie's not completely bad. I just thought there were a few things overlooked in the hype. Nice to have this settled. I'm from Michigan too, btw. In East Lansing.
Specter Posted February 8, 2005 Posted February 8, 2005 No kidding! That's awesome! My friends Andy and Megan live there too, and my friend's Katelyn, Ryan, and Amy go to MSU. Small world!
Socrates Posted February 8, 2005 Posted February 8, 2005 Personally, I thought it was probably the best superhero movie of all time. I thought the script and story were great. I guess I'm not enough of an "FX nerd" to catch all the technical flaws. it kind of annoys me when people take a movie and completely pick the special effects apart and say the movie sucked because the special effects weren't up to their standard. A movie is more than a series of special effects.
