dUSt Posted February 15, 2005 Posted February 15, 2005 A little background. As some of you know, phatmass raises most of it's money by selling t-shirts and hats. Some of the money comes from CD sales and donations. We use the money we raise to make music, travel to different shows, purchase stuff to give away at events (rosaries, holy cards, pamphlets, etc), and to keep this site up and running. Part of the reason that we've been able to be so succesful is because we purchase things in bulk, and we do this by waiting until we have enough money to do so. I also maintain a "do it yourself" philosophy. If I see on opportunity to be self sufficient, I'll do it. My thinking is that if phatmass has it's own screenpriniing equipment, we won't have to keep paying someone else (and not only phatmass, but bands like Remnant, Point 5 Covenant, etc will be able to use the equipment to make thier shirts also). Anyway. Vote away. Those of you that have been around long enough know that I run everything by my "pham" before doing it. Phatmass is not mine--it's OURS.
zealousrap Posted February 15, 2005 Posted February 15, 2005 Dust, your private message box is full.... now that things are fixed with my email and whatnot, is it too late to get involved with the aftermass project???
inDEED Posted February 15, 2005 Posted February 15, 2005 Ah man...I voted TO spend $ on a screenprinter right now... Change my vote to spending it to get the quality hip hop out FASTER!!! Ears & hearts are longing for the talented music and important message of the fellas here @ Phatmass... My .02 cents...

Thy Geekdom Come Posted February 15, 2005 Posted February 15, 2005 If your clothing sales are more consistent and steady, then invest in the machine. What's more, you can be contracted out for other shirts and such and make more money that way. If your music makes more consistent and steady sales, then invest in the next few projects, putting some money aside from each sale for the machine. As for the final option...sometimes charity needs to run like a business...spend money to make money. Skim some off the donations to charities to advance your apostolate so that you can make even more revenue for donations.

Specter Posted February 15, 2005 Posted February 15, 2005 Before I can vote, I'd need to see what the machine is capable of, and how it does the printing. Do printing places allow for elaborate designs and how elaborate do they get? How do you transfer the images onto the press and then onto the shirt? That sort of thing. If it's like screen printing with paint and a squeegy (sp?) then you can almost make that thing for less than $100.
raptor13 Posted February 15, 2005 Posted February 15, 2005 i'm no good at making important decisions, so instead of voting i'll just pray that the Holy Spirit guide you to the right decision. "Thou art Dust, and upon this dust i shall build my phatmass, and the brooms of the financial world shall not prevail against thee!!"
theculturewarrior Posted February 15, 2005 Posted February 15, 2005 Well...this might not be what you want to hear but... Most of the t-shirts I've seen on Phatmass are super cool, but could be done with a simple silk screen. Why complicate things?
BLAZEr Posted February 15, 2005 Posted February 15, 2005 dUSt you can also do this as a side business for local parishes who need t-shirts . . . I think you should go for it . . .
Birgitta Noel Posted February 15, 2005 Posted February 15, 2005 I voted no. My hesitation is that if something goes wrong with the machine it's your prob. , and your expense. Sorta like a house, if you're renting you call the landlord, if you've bought, well, you know, you just bought a house....
Philippe Posted February 15, 2005 Posted February 15, 2005 im in the clothing business and i was talking with a shirt printer and he was saying that not even the big companies like quicksilver have their own machines. They do it all by middle men.
Kilroy the Ninja Posted February 15, 2005 Posted February 15, 2005
Do It.
Hey, you're using MY character..... haha I voted that you should buy it now if you're capable. Giving the bands access to it is great and I liked the idea of using it for your parish, etc. As long as it's not going to put you or PM in a bad way financially now, and you intend to continue with clothing sales, then I think it makes sense. I would also recommend checking out used equipment, and seeing how much a new unit might sell for once used, just in case it might need to be sold again. (All part of the homework). I really like the designs you've offered and would have bought up a few, but my husband's a poor Catholic school teacher.... hopefully we'll be able to soon....
