karin Posted February 16, 2005 Posted February 16, 2005 I just thought this was interesting. Gibson to release Passion "lite" for Easter Mel Gibson will release a new, low-violence version of his highly successful The Passion of the Christ movie next month, according to the movie industry newspaper Daily Variety. Gibson is said to be trimming five to six minutes of violent scenes ahead of the film's March 11 reappearance on screens in the United States. The original film raked in $A603.54 million in its North American run that began on Ash Wednesday one year ago. But Gibson noted that many people had avoided the film because of its grisly portrayal of Jesus Christ being tortured by Roman soldiers. "There has been quite a demand by the religious community to bring [the film] back for Easter," Bruce Davey, Gibson's partner at Icon Productions, told Variety. "And there has been a lot of discussion about the violence. Mel wanted to try and accommodate those people by making a version that is softer and gentler. The film, The Passion Recut, will be beamed onto 500 to 750 screens by distributor Newmarket Films, Variety said, adding that the new versions would not be subject to an audience age restriction. "There are no new scenes, and the cuts are limited to the more violent aspects of the film, if that's the right term. The scourging scene in particular has been substantially adjusted," Mr Davey said. SOURCE Gibson softens 'Passion' for Easter release (ABC/AFP 11/2/05)
Theoketos Posted February 16, 2005 Posted February 16, 2005 I think I am going to buy the orginal right now.
Catholictothecore Posted February 16, 2005 Posted February 16, 2005 who wants to drink diluted root bear? The most gruesome parts of it are the ones they need to keep. Their the ones that move you the most.
argent_paladin Posted February 16, 2005 Posted February 16, 2005 I say the more the merrier. If people want to watch the R-rated version they can. But now people can watch the G-rated version instead. I would have serious reservations about bringing an 8-yr-old to the original, but not the new version. Later, he can watch the more violent version.
dUSt Posted February 16, 2005 Posted February 16, 2005 I just wish they'd hurry up and release the special edition DVD with director commentary, deleted scenes, etc.
argent_paladin Posted February 17, 2005 Posted February 17, 2005 If they did that, we might not go to the theater and watch it.
EcceNovaFacioOmni Posted February 17, 2005 Posted February 17, 2005 (edited)
I just wish they'd hurry up and release the special edition DVD with director commentary, deleted scenes, etc.
Yeah, I want to watch the scene with Peter (straight from the Gospel) that was "anti-Semetic." RemnantRules Posted February 17, 2005 Posted February 17, 2005 first of all I don't think an 8 year old should watch either version. If they cut out the scourging and the nail itself then it's just as CatholictotheCore said, it's diluting it! But that's just my opinion.
Catholictothecore Posted February 17, 2005 Posted February 17, 2005 I just remember seeing it on Ash Wednesday. It was awesome, cause I was going on retreat that weekend, and so it kinda started that for me. The nails, the scouraging being so long and, well, more than i had ever imagined, all that was just....neccesary for me. Anyway, they were what I can still remember the best. AND YOU NEED TO REMEMBER A MOVIE LIKE THAT!
hopeful1 Posted February 18, 2005 Posted February 18, 2005 *remembers plans to buy the passion on dvd and pray the sorrowful mysteries of the rosary like she said she would for lent..."
mamalove Posted February 18, 2005 Posted February 18, 2005 You know, some people just can't physically stomach the violence. Like my mom for example. She would love to see it, but the sight of blood almost makes her pass out. I bought the Passion photo book, and she can't even look at that without feeling woosy. I, for one, think it is a good idea. . . though I prefer the original myself.
Donna Posted February 18, 2005 Posted February 18, 2005 True, Mama. And also, there are the scrupulous...
Meggie Posted February 18, 2005 Posted February 18, 2005 I borrowed the DVD from someone but I haven't had the strength to watch it...knowing thats its a couple hours of pure torture...but I may consider getting the cut version when it comes out, just so I could know what its all aout.
aloha918 Posted February 18, 2005 Posted February 18, 2005 i think it is a good idea becasue it will branch to a larger audience.........
Catholictothecore Posted February 18, 2005 Posted February 18, 2005 I suppose so. But still, it just won't be the same as the original. g2g :leave:
heyyoimjohnny Posted February 18, 2005 Posted February 18, 2005 It is a good idea. More people reached. Those who don't like it don't have to watch it.
Isadore96 Posted February 18, 2005 Posted February 18, 2005 Not bad. Now we get to watch the Passion in theater again, AND the devil has no excuses to keep people away from watching it! Good call by Mel Gibson to have two versions now. I dont think the second will make nearly as much money as the first; nor do I think it will cost as much to make. But the important thing is it will reach even more people, and thats what really counts. Of course you like to see the money going into the hands of good people; but money is only a means not an end.
