Wedding Present Idea?

Hi, in two weeks I am going to be attending a wedding of two friends of mine (24 and 23years old) who are not Catholic but Christian Reformed. As such, they believe birth control is okay. They are very good Christians and are very interested in the topic of human sexuality (esp. Meg, cause I lived with her for a year and we always had interesting discussions) . I was thinking of buying them a copy of Theology of the Body and an Intro to NFP as part of their wedding present (I'm sure they'd read it). I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions of which version to buy or a specific title to buy for a young, Protestant couple b/c I only know a little bit about this stuff and I don't want to buy them something overly academic or difficult. But I also would like something that's not overly simplistic. Thanks in advance. :)

Try "The Good News About Sex and Marriage" by Christopher West. It's in a Q & A format which works well.

I like "Love and Responsibility" because it is not too preachy and covers all aspects of love and married life, not just contraception. But it really comes to the point early. Do they have respect for the current Pope? If not, it might be hard because he wrote it and is on the cover.

The Paulist Sisters publish the entire collection of catechetical texts of the Theology of the Body in one volume (It also contains Humanae Vitae and Evangelium Vitae).

It's pretty heavy reading, and obviously, written by the Bishop of Rome, so I don't know how open a Protestant would be to reading it. But it's an amazing book.

While I can't help you with what to get, I can say, you've got a dashingly good idea.

God bless,

This is a great book, but it's REALLY hard to understand.......unless you read it like 10 times and ask for help like I did.

Don't get me wrong, I love it, Love Pj2, but it's not exactly "laity" friendly. But I love PJ2 so much, I read it and practically asked for help on meanings and definitions, etc.

"Three to get married" is a good book!!! (Fulton Sheen)

And Christopher West is great as well.

The Bible and Birth Control by Proven (Protestant!) :)

West has a number of CD sets that may be useful.

The Art of Natural Family Planning is a good book, but a bit heavy as a starting point. It's a how to manual for NFP used by CCL to teach couples....

thanks for telling me! :) the summary i read on amazon said that the intro to nfp book was a good book for beginners. what would you recommend as a starter nfp book?

Well, it depends on what you mean by starter NFP book. It's good if they want to learn how to do it, but if you are just looking for something to introduce them to the idea of NFP I'm not sure that that's the best thing, ie it might seem overwhelming...

I don't know of other NFP books personally, but I know there are others out there. Perhaps someone else can weigh in?

There's another book about a protestant couple deciding to use NFP, not sure what it's called though, but it's well-known.

how well known? and why don't you know about it?! ;)

Whoah! Way too much I would think. Maybe the intro book by Christopher West, Theology of the Body for Beginners, or whatever the title is.

You may thumb through Christopher West if you like that idea to be sure about it. While I think he is right on about everything, I really dislike his delivery. I find him to be a bit condesending in the way he words things sometimes. Just a thought if you're trying to convince someone.

Well, then what's a good non-West Theology of the Body. I'm just hoping to buy them a book, have them read it and enjoy it, and then have the Holy Spirit take over from there. That's all. If nothing else, at least they'll have a deeper understanding of what marriage is, right?

I remember what it's called, it's called Open Embrace: A Protestant Couple Rethinks Contraception by Sam & Bethany Torode.

That's funny! I called a nfp-practicing friend of mine for advice and she talked to her nfp teacher and she recommended that very book.
