Aloysius Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 Is it a bad sign that i feel like having a mid-life crises and i'm only 17? I can't sleep and am sittin around lookin at old photographs and yearbooks wishing for the carefree days of youth... on one level I want to call my gf... on another I want to call up a friend from the past I haven't talked to in forever... but alas they're probably both asleep and the friend from the past has obviously grown up... and my gf.. sometimes in my mind she's this symbol of this hated responsibility and maturity... but I know she's really fun and I love her to death. and it's not that we as a couple aren't ready to be serious.. i mean if it was still societably ok we'd probably get married tommarrow (but alas it isn't, and she refuses to do it anyway! ) this is why i want to sail around the world and/or buy an island and adventurously tame it to live there... alas, i speak too much of the word alas... anyway, I keep looking into the future trying to figure out how to make myself young and innocent again only with extra knowledge... like: I want in my house to be a room for drawing on the wallls... and trees in the back to climb... but then I'm also in this paradoxical mature knowledgable do-gooder that wants my house to also have a spot where my own business would be centered... and a Xenodochium (place for strangers) where we help local people who need a place to stay or something... and of course I have an exact picture of what the bedroom would look like... ... errr.. yeah.. d'ya think I can have it all? a tree in the back to climb and a room to draw on the walls and all my fanciful adventures plus a resonsible husband and a father who runs his own business and helps people?
Aloysius Posted March 3, 2005 Author Posted March 3, 2005 does this mean I'm going to die at 34? <my gf would answer: yes, all that pop you drink is going to kill you!>
corban711 Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 when i turned 20 i had a mid-life crisis too. 20 is the worst age to be! ever! hehe. sorry to anyone who is 20...it is just a rough age to be i think.
Aloysius Posted March 3, 2005 Author Posted March 3, 2005 at least that indicates you'll die at 40.. 7 years longer life than me!
Aloysius Posted March 3, 2005 Author Posted March 3, 2005 let's not make this thread too serious. just my random musings...
corban711 Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005
at least that indicates you'll die at 40.. 7 years longer life than me!
yay! i will make it to 40! hehe sorry you are only going till 34 though! use your time wisely! hehe
Aloysius Posted March 3, 2005 Author Posted March 3, 2005 which is exactly why I'm going to sail around the world!
Aloysius Posted March 3, 2005 Author Posted March 3, 2005 that defines no one. as Apotheon says, it is in no way an ontological reality. but yes, I have same sex attractions. my gf knows full well my struggles. although if I think about it maybe that's part of the reason I want to redo my youth.. or something... <if cimlog's readin this, i know you'll be cool because this subject's come up like at the lunch table and stuff and we agreed about it, i'm sure you understand why i never told you and would appreciate you not tellin anyone else, though BLarz and Leah know.> so yeah, what happened to keepin this not serious? and God promised not to flood the earth ever again! what? what else were you thinking that meant? jeez you have your mind in the gutter....
Aloysius Posted March 3, 2005 Author Posted March 3, 2005 hmmm... thank you. are you going to give it all to me now then? that seemed implied in your giving me permission to have it all. sweet.
God Conquers Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 I suggest placing some money in long-term mutual funds, hibernating for several years, and then when you wake up all your wildest dreams can come true!!!!! after you cut your fingernails.
Paladin D Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 I sort of know what you mean Al, but like my dad always says: "No matter how old you get, never quit being a kid." Because if you do, you'll become a miserable man.
jasJis Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 'Life crisises' come all the time. They have nothing to do with being in the middle of your life span. I'm *cough-ty 4* and I've had a few 'mid-life crisises'. The life you will have is nothing to the life you have today (I ain't talking about eternal life). There are tons of joys today that God gives us. My 100 year old Grandmother used to say 'Too soon old, too late smart' and never admitted she was old until she was in her late 90's. Even when she was in a nursing home for the last weeks of her life, she couldn't understand other people there in the 70's and 80's who complained of being old. Catholicism is counter-cultural. You can have it all. Joy in the midst of suffering, peace in the world of turmoil. Yesterday's gone, tomorrow doesn't exist, God is giving you NOW only. Don't be the party pooper.
Theoketos Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 (edited) The Apostle says "When I was a child, I used to talk as a child, think as a child, reason as a child; when I became a man, I put aside childish things." (I Cor 13:11) He put away such childish things in order that he may truly love. With true of love come tremendous responsibility. And it is only in true love of God through prayer, Your neighbor through alms, and your self through fasting and self sacrafice that you can come to know true joy. That being said, I feel the same way some times. Usually for me I glorify the best and past times making them seem so much better then it was. What snaps me out t of this a conviction that I must do all things to glorify God. And right now He is calling me, by my name, to be come a saint, so that the whole world is converted. <edit> I really miss being an undergraduate, real life is way harder </edit> Edited March 3, 2005 by Theoketos
Aloysius Posted March 3, 2005 Author Posted March 3, 2005 welcome to draaaaaggssville... population: this thread not really... just not gettin anything from it... i was having fun last night. I know all them words and ideas and such... yada yada yada <not to make light of your advice, i thank you for it> </maturity> G.K. Chesterton had a wall he drew on. I just wanna develop into an intelligent, knowledgeable, witty, immature kid.
jasJis Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005
I just wanna develop into an intelligent, knowledgeable, witty, immature kid.
EXACTLY! That is my life achievment. Unfortunately, the immaturity get's tempered with life's neccesities. So what's to be bummed about? Only old people worry about the past and serious people worry about the future. They're not my problem.
Aloysius Posted March 3, 2005 Author Posted March 3, 2005 I don't know... what did I originally post at 3AM last night? is that what I was saying? lol all I remember is that I was having fun with this thread and then I read the latest posts today and felt a bit of a drag. lol... never mind -pax-
Ash Wednesday Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 Life circumstances and events trigger "crises" I think. The last 3 years of my life have been a big fat identity and direction crisis. I've become a big "life experience" and "achieve-o-holic" and I'm always running after that golden ring. Have it all, be it all, do it all. And I wonder when I will ever stop being so "ambitious, wild, hard-to-tame artist" and just learn to chill out and be more open to "settling down." Maybe when I finish grad school I'll finally feel ready. I have to admit I unfairly associate marriage and children with losing my identity and freedom, yet the irony is, maybe in family life I would perhaps find the fulfillment and connectedness I've been looking for. Don't give me that "you need to find it with God" because you're preaching to the choir and I already know that and it's not like I haven't made that effort. It's all pretty frustrating.
