corban711 Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005 well...C.S. Lews and his inklings made drinking with religious discussions quite the thing over at their pub.
cmotherofpirl Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005 I would love to go to a TOT!!!!!!!!!!! Theology and Baileys Irish Creme sounds like a dream come true.
Brother Adam Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005
I think that's just common sense man.
You'd be surprised how few people have that 'common' sense. It really isn't so common.
Theoketos Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005
I dont see the harm in it even if someone does have one too many. whats the worst that could happen? a good natured attempt at water to wine? i'd laugh.
The Harm is that drunkness is a capital sin.
cmotherofpirl Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005 So you don't get drunk and have a designated driver.
Norseman82 Posted March 8, 2005 Posted March 8, 2005
We have the same program here. I don't think it's a terrible thing. I don't seriously think anyone at these talks drinks as much as you're implying. They're adults, a little wine or a glass of beer isn't going to dumb down the theology for them. As a matter of fact, a few months ago the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal were featured at one of the meetings.
Theology on Tap has been big in Chicago for many years. Unfortunately, some presentations have been "dumbed down" and some have been outrightly questionable or of little value. Others though were quite good. The highlight is a finale mass followed by a picnic at the Cardinal's residence, including a meet/greet with the Cardinal himself. Oh, and most people have non-alcoholic beverages. Only once do I recall alcohol being a problem, and the person was probably drinking prior to coming there anyway.
Zoecool13 Posted March 8, 2005 Posted March 8, 2005 Theology on Tap is an awesome program that i recommend all to attend. Alchohol there is no big deal... As long as you're all adults, no worries. One of the greatest Catholic charitable organizations is the Knights of Columbus, and alchohol is a beverage available after meetings...in many councils. As long as you do it respectfully, it's ok.
Duc_In_Altum Posted March 8, 2005 Posted March 8, 2005 We've got TOT every wednesday here at Benedictine. It's golden yo. It's just a comfortable atmosphere where folks can have a few suds and feel free to talk God. It's not an evangelization mission, though it can be. It's simply about establishing community and keepin it real. Theology on Tap is good sauce, folks. el paz, -Joe
Paladin D Posted March 8, 2005 Posted March 8, 2005 At a going-away party for my former parish priest, Father drank at least three Bloody Mary's.
Ash Wednesday Posted March 8, 2005 Posted March 8, 2005
Thomas Aquinas also says that Wine is good for the nerves before debate and war.
Aquanis was one smart man -- because that is absolutely true. Some of the best theological discussions I've ever had were in restaurants and bars. The atmosphere is comfortable and cozy and oftentimes you end up sharing your Catholic faith with people you never thought beforehand. Besides, anyone who just gets sauced at a church function is really pathetic and lame. Know when to say when at all times -- as I say "The amount I drink is controlled by how good I want to feel the next morning."
missionarybelle Posted March 8, 2005 Posted March 8, 2005 I think that TOT is an AWESOME way to evangelize! and to have a nice atmosphere
immaculata Posted March 9, 2005 Posted March 9, 2005 I went to my first Theology on Tap a few weeks ago when our chaplain was giving a talk about Tolkien and the Catholic themes in Lord of the Rings.. Of course, I couldn't partake in any of the wine and spirits, but it was really neat to sit around and have great discussions with the theology teachers from my school and other awesome Catholic young adults.. I can't wait till the summer program starts!
DemonSlayer Posted March 10, 2005 Posted March 10, 2005
Strip clubs advertize in your parish bulletin!? That is WRONG.
Yeah, I was talking about Theology on Tap, how'd you think that?
Theoketos Posted March 15, 2005 Posted March 15, 2005
We've got TOT every wednesday here at Benedictine. It's golden yo. Jaime Posted March 15, 2005 Posted March 15, 2005 I went to a Theology on Tap and it was horrible. It turned out to be Theology and tapdance. My shoes hurt. I couldn't get the whole "step, ball shuffle" thing down and quite frankly I don't think men should ever wear legwarmers. But the one with beer sounds great!!
