Dave Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005 What do y'all think of a priest who wears cologne? The previous pastor at the parish in my hometown wore it. Maybe I'm weird for thinking this, but to me it just didn't seem right.
Paladin D Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005 I have no problem with a priest using cologne, if I became a priest I would wear it. Actually, I think priests should start using breath mints. The last two priests (including this one) tend to have bad breath, and I'm an altar server who has to hold the book right infront of them.
Lil Red Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005 why do you think it is wrong? are you sure it wasn't deodorant? i know there are some deodorants that smell like cologne (my hubby's does).
Nicole8223 Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005 I'm not sure. I think it's a little bit questionable. My boyfriend does not wear cologne unless we are together and it is a special occasion. Otherwise, he says that it is used to attract women, and he does not want to do that. He is clean all the time and always smells "good," but he doesn't wear cologne very often at all. I'm not saying priests shouldn't, but just some more food for thought. I mean, that would go for married men when they are not with their wives as well, if it seems appropriate for priests not to wear it. And what about women? Hmmm...lots to think about....good question.
Guest Eremite Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005 I've made a private vow of celibacy, and I wear cologne. I don't consider it a means to pick up women. It's just basic grooming.
Lil Red Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005 i wear perfume to please myself, not my hubby and certainly not other people. i don't use it to pick up people.
Paladin D Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005 How does cologne attract women? If I had a chocolate scented cologne, would that mean women would want to eat me?
Nicole8223 Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005 Same for me, but at the same time, it still does attract people. If a good smelling person walks by, your attention will probably be drawn to them, even if only for a second. I have been trying to be careful, especially because I go to a secular college. Our intentions may be totally innocent, but sometimes they are affects anyway. Just a thought.....
Lil Red Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005 there is nothing wrong with wearing perfume, it depends what your intentions are. i can't be responsible for the actions of others. and i think people would be more drawn to the clothes you are wearing (and how you are wearing them) than how you smell
Nicole8223 Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005 Yeah, clothes are definitely more of an issue!!! You know what bothers me, though? The names of all the colognes and designer perfumes. It's so frustrating, cause it might smell so good and have a name like Seduction or Obsession or something. I hate that. It's like an immediate turn off...I know that's off topic, but it just bugs me! I stick to fruity sprays...they're safe and fresh scented!
Dave Posted March 7, 2005 Author Posted March 7, 2005
why do you think it is wrong? are you sure it wasn't deodorant? i know there are some deodorants that smell like cologne (my hubby's does).
As for your 2nd question, at least with the deodorants I've come across, even the best-smelling ones have a scent that makes it obvious that it's deodorant and not cologne. As for your first question, well ... this priest acted rather effeminately what with the way he talked, certain mannerisms, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if he was gay. So if he is in fact gay, then to me his wearing of cologne could possibly give people the wrong idea.
Paladin D Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005 I just ran out of this stuff: Raw Vanilla by COTY Very pleasent smell too.
jmjtina Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005 One of our priests who's known us since we were little kids, for Christmas we gave him a bottle of cologne. Smelled gooooooood. We told him to take a hint and wear it. Deodorant wasn't cutting it. If I become a nun, I hope to get some bath and body works: Cucumber Melon. and some cool Nike shoes.

Tink Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005 (edited) Priests are people, too! Sometimes it's hard to tell because I know Old Spice has some really yummy smelling deodorants  (It's sad that I can tell instantly when I a guy in wearing it) and things like that. Priests take a vow of celibacy, but no one said anything about a vow of stinkiness! Edited March 7, 2005 by Tink
