jc is 4 Jesus Christ Posted March 15, 2005 Posted March 15, 2005 I recently got into an argument with a Calvinist friend of mine, and he said that Catholics added books to the Bible, when I said that they took some away. Explanation?
journeyman Posted March 15, 2005 Posted March 15, 2005 Your friend might say I'm biased in your favor . . . but I agree with you. This article (link is in the reference section - along with many many more) specifically addressed the question of adding/subtracting books: http://www.envoymagazine.com/backissues/1....ril_story2.html Thanks phatcatholic!
Paphnutius Posted March 15, 2005 Posted March 15, 2005
I recently got into an argument with a Calvinist friend of mine, and he said that Catholics added books to the Bible, when I said that they took some away. Explanation?
They did indeed take away books from the bible, it is a historical fact. The cannon started to take shape in the 2nd century and was finalized in the 4th century. All the 27 books that we have were found in the Vulgate which came after the Synod in Rome. YOu can look to the early church fathers such as: Origien, Eusibieus, Irenaues, Tertullian. you might also want to look up the Muratorian Canon.
Paphnutius Posted March 15, 2005 Posted March 15, 2005 Sorry mis-stated myself. The Council of Trent finalized the canon technically. The Synod of Rome set a canon that was recongized by the universal churches at Carthage. Slight but important distinciton. My bad.

argent_paladin Posted March 18, 2005 Posted March 18, 2005 You might ask your friend that if Catholics added to the Bible and that it was only in the 16th century that that happened, then why do the Orthodox and other Christians have "extra" books too? And why did the Septuagint, made by the Jews have these same "extra" books? Did the Catholics travel back in time and help the Jews add these books? When Paul and other NT writers are talking about scripture (as in "all scripture is profitable for instruction.." they are referring to the Septuagint, which has those "extra" books.
