phatcatholic Posted April 3, 2005 Posted April 3, 2005 i know that Dei Verbum is one. beyond that, i'm kinda at a loss. so, if you all know of any other church documents that discuss how we should approach scripture, please list them here. if you know the title, i can find the actual document. there's a thread at another forum about the right way to read scripture, and i want to have the "official" (or as official as possible) stance of the Church, not just recently but throughout the ages. thanks, phatcatholic
phatcatholic Posted April 3, 2005 Author Posted April 3, 2005 this article basically lists and summarizes all the relevant documents from Providentissimus Deus in 1893 to Dei Verbum in 1965. is anyone aware of any relevant documents written before or after this time frame?
journeyman Posted April 3, 2005 Posted April 3, 2005 I could have seen me asking that question . . . of you . . . The documents I've read recently all dealt with the Eucharist . . . and might be ancillary to the interpretation question as an example of how interpretation was applied Redemptionis Sacramentum; Ecclesia de Eucharista; Novo Millenio Innuente History of the Exposition of the Mass (I think you posted that), Mane Nobiscum Domine, Dominum et vivificantem . . . short answer . . . sorry, boss
phatcatholic Posted April 4, 2005 Author Posted April 4, 2005 (edited) hehe, its all good i used to be afraid to ask a question b/c i felt like everyone expected me to have the answer, or at least be able to find the answer. i mean, apotheoun never asks any questions, ya know? but, then i just realized that i'm not really growing and benefiting from this site that way, so i just said screw it. plus, i guess it was sort of a pride issue, so i needed to swallow that anyway. well, that was probably more information then you were wanting if anyone has any other documents, let me know pax christi, phatcatholic Edited April 4, 2005 by phatcatholic
journeyman Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 This isn't a "church" document . . . A Catholic Guide to the Bible, by Fr. Oscar Lukefahr Very elementary guide to reading the Bible from a Catholic perspective . . . which, although I have not finished reading it, is good for simple folks like me
Archangel Posted April 7, 2005 Posted April 7, 2005 This isn't much, but I hope it helps. http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/13635b.htm In the section under "VI. ATTITUDE OF THE CHURCH TOWARDS THE READING OF THE BIBLE IN THE VERNACULAR", it explains why we don't have much for the first 1500 years and much more in the past 500.
(1) During the course of the first millennium of her existence, the Church did not promulgate any law concerning the reading of Scripture in the vernacular. The faithful were rather encouraged to read the Sacred Books according to their spiritual needs (cf. St. Irenaeus, "Adv. haer.", III, iv). (2) The next five hundred years show only local regulations concerning the use of the Bible in the vernacular. ... (3) It is only in the beginning of the last five hundred years that we meet with a general law of the Church concerning the reading of the Bible in the vernacular ...
