IXpenguin21 Posted April 7, 2005 Posted April 7, 2005 A lot of talk and speculation about the World Series this year and which team God likes more, and well, i felt i should speak up about the truth... In claiming that God loves certain baseball teams over others based on names of the team and colors, I think we are all forgetting the Angels (from wherever they claim to reside this year) and the San Diego Padres. Besides, we all know that God loves the Yankees most. So let us end this banter as to how easy it will be for any team competent enough to master the right field “baggy” and astro-turf meadow in Minnesota to win the AL Central. Facts are facts: 26 world championships, 39 pennants (since 1921). Unsurpassed in excellence as a franchise overall. And they don’t always win the World Series. They didn’t win last year. They didn’t win the year before that. They didn’t win three years ago. They didn’t win four years ago. They havn't won 75 of them (from 1903-2004, excluding 1904 & 1994 because no championship was held). They haven’t won as much in our lifetimes as history would have you believe, but then again, they have existed as a franchise for 102 years this season. Don’t pose the argument that they buy their victories either. Super stars like Derek Jeter, Bernie Williams, Jorge Posada, and Mariano Rivera (these last two games have been rough for him, I know) are home grown heroes. Others such as Randy Johnson, Alex Rodriguez, and Kevin Brown were signed to teams and traded to the Yankees. Their contracts represent the inability to be paid by the team they were signed to, and/or their realization that signing a contract for a quarter of a billion dollars doesn’t mean you’ll play on a world class team (eh-hem... A-Rod). Players try to win on the franchise they are employed by. They then ask to be traded when they are not winning. Usually to the Yankees. True, George Steinbrenner pays more in penalty taxes for his payroll than some owners pay their entire team. New York has the money. This is why the New York Mets are paying $101,305,821 this season on players; the third highest in baseball behind the two best teams in the AL, the Yankees and Red Sox. Why aren’t the Mets the best team in the National League? I guess because no matter how much you spend on talent, they have to have good management behind them. (Further, the Arizona Diamondbacks, the worst team in baseball, spent $69,780,750; 13th out of 30 teams, but only had a winning percentage of .315.) It’s not the $208,306,817 that will prove a successful season in the Bronx come September. It’s not Randy Johnson or Alex Rodriguez, or even Derek Jeter. It’s the history of the Yankees. It’s their nature to relentlessly pursue triumph. Though success is not always guaranteed, the future always possesses certainty that it will come sooner than later. You can bet on it. Because I have said everything I feel is worth saying, I will not comment further in this thread. Please PM me with any congratulations on my thoroughness and/or confessions that you too believe that the greatest team resides in the Bronx, NY. Any and all opinions are welcome but are no assurances that anyone is right. Thank you, God bless, and play ball. I am a Yankees fan, but I do not mean this to in anyway offensive.
corban711 Posted April 7, 2005 Posted April 7, 2005 Padres and Angels....my two favorite teams. i have liked the Padres since i was 5..Tony Gwynn was the best! yes, i know they have sucked for just about my whole life...but i really did like them. the Angels are just rad and their stadium is like 15-20 minutes from my house! p.s. I am not really a big sports guy at all. i really don't care that much about it, but baseball is my favorite sport and i really like watching angel games too.
Guest Eremite Posted April 7, 2005 Posted April 7, 2005 The only reason the Yankee legacy has endured is because King George has those deep pockets. There was a period before he bought the team when they were the laughing stocks of baseball. Take my advice, and don't get too caught up in legacies. People here in Boston can't leave 1986. The Celtic legacy is dead. To quote our old friend Rick Pitino, "Robert Parrish, Larry Bird, and Kevin McHale aint walking through that door." In 20 years, when Georgie Pordgie joins his old Yankee mates in the bowels of hell, and there's nobody willing to spend spend spend, Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, and Bernie Williams won't be walking through that door. [end of rant] Oh yah, just for good measure, Big Papi (aka David Ortiz) will be the MVP this year. How you like them apples.
Tony Posted April 7, 2005 Posted April 7, 2005 Deep Pockets sure didn't work for the New York Rangers... all those big names and not make the playoffs.
Guest Eremite Posted April 7, 2005 Posted April 7, 2005 (edited) On a serious note, though, I don't blame Georgie Pordgie for spending. That's the name of the game. I blame MLB for not having a salary cap, like the NFL. That's why the NFL is so exciting. Parity. Then again, a genius like Bill Belichick comes along, and ruins it for everyone else.... Ah, I won't bore you with tales of Super Bowl glory past and present. Sleep tight, kiddies. Edited April 7, 2005 by Eremite
argent_paladin Posted April 7, 2005 Posted April 7, 2005 Actually, the Pads are pretty good this year. And I am not for a salary cap, but I am for adding another team to the New York market. The Mets and the Yankees are two of the highest salaried teams. Maybe a third NY team would cut into business for both and thus trim their rosters. That said... Go Giants!

Saying they are God's team is extremally wrong and horrific, and you may have just condemned yourself to hell for such blasphemy. New Pope is going to read this and excommunicate you latae sententiae Lets go through the list: Lust- The Yankees do not view the World Series Championship as they should. It is a beautiful most sacred honor to be deemed the Champions, and they do not appreciate this fact. They see it as a trophy, and not a symbol of what it represents. Greed- (do i need to say more?) With a huge payroll, and an average giving almost every player 10 million dollars. Seriously, what do people need all that money for? Steinbrenner has choosen to not consider the other teams by his meager attempts of profit-sharing. Pope John Paul II said the rich must help the poor in his visit to Mexico. Hence even more of why he is being controlled by satan. Envy- They want to be number 1. They want to be able to beat the Red Sox. They want They want They want...so they buy. They do not play for the love of the game, but rather just to make as much money as possible. Gluttony- So much money. So much talent. If baseball teams were food, then Yankees would be a 5 lb. sirloin steak, a dozen baked potatoes, 6 ears of corn, 4 cubic feet of salad, 3 gallons of mushroom soup, and a 7 layer quadruple sheet sized cake. And the eater is Steinbrenner, and New York. This is just too much. A simple Big Mac, or a bowl of cereal should be fine. This is just too much. Pride- Ever hear any of those darn Yankees? They are the most conceited, egotistical people I've ever heard! Anger- Steinbrenner gets mad when he loses. He doesn't play for the LOVE of the game. He buys buys buys, and builds up the spirits of all the Yankees fans. When the team loses, the fans become angry due to the fact that they have been conditioned to believe that they should be invincible. At the same time, Steinbrenner's actions have led to 50 million non-Yankees fans to get angry with them so therefore I make a JW decree and that the Yankees are the cause of 50 million people getting angry. This should not be the case. Sloth- Not even Satan wants anyone or anything to partake in all 7 deadly sins. It's not worth it! When he can get you on the other 6! There, I have proven my point on how the Yankees are Satan's team. Your army will be defeated by God's team of the White Sox soon, the "masters of the astro-turf Minnesota". As for the Angels, they are greedy too. They should pick a name. For this reason, God is upset with them. Padres are a good team, but God prefers you to live by action, not in words. They claim to be "fathers" but the Sox dress the part and act it. Finally, you claim "Any and all opinions are welcome but are no assurances that anyone is right." WRONG I tell you!! I am correct until someone can rebute this argument. With that said, i re-release today's prediction "White Sox 6- Indians 4" If you have any questions, we've got two threads going on this subject manner. PEACE! P.S. The White Sox did a nice memorial for the Pope on Monday, did the Yanks do that Sunday? As they opened the season, and played on a Sunday...being opening day, that distracted a lot of us from what was really important by us not giving our full attention and respect to keeping the day Holy.
What nonsense. If it wasn't for the Yankees and Babe Ruth you wouldn't have a national past time. Guys like Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, Phil Rizzuto, Tony Lazzeri, etc. are the devil? Or is it the anger losing teams have towards the them? There wasn't free agency until the 70's and we have won 6 of our 26 WS since then, care to explain the first 20? The Yankees are pure baseball playing in a league filled with pretenders. 2005 is the Year of the Yankees!
Zoecool13 Posted April 8, 2005 Posted April 8, 2005
What nonsense. It is incorrect for you to say that we would not have a national pastime if it wasn't for the Yankees and Babe Ruth. It was a National sport in the 1890s. Before Babe Ruth was even born, before the Yankees were even a team. Personally, I believe home run hitters are overrated. I felt that way about McGuire, still do about Sosa, and always have about Ruth. Had Ruth played in a different era, I doubt he would have done as well as he did. At the same time, had the 1919 White Sox not been banned, i can guarentee that the Yankees 26 would be lower to at least 25...and the Sox probably would've beaten Brooklyn in 1920, and probably won in 21 possibly 22. No team was even close to being as good as them in 1919. Ruth would have been known by his home runs, but Joe Jackson would have been known as the best player of that era. Next, Free agency hasn't won your championships. Clearly, as the last several years have shown, the yankees are losing team as well. There is no anger towards them for winning considering they have not won anything lately. The problem i have, is that there is to much money in the game to begin with and Steinbrenner just spends spends spends. For these reasons, and all the reasons that you quoted for me, i restate that the New York Yankees are indeed a team that Satan continues to love, and has had a profound effect upon them. 2005 is not the Year of the Yankees. This is the Year of the Eucharist! and since the Eucharist is Jesus, and Jesus is God, then we can deduce that this is the year of God's team, THE CHICAGO WHITE SOX!
argent_paladin Posted April 10, 2005 Posted April 10, 2005 (edited) This thread has proven my long-held belief: Yankees smell of elderberries. But this suckage is not from the players, who are uniformly great and play baseball as it should be played. Nor is it from GM Cashman (no more apt name could be had), nor even from Steinbrenner, who is a great owner. No, the source of the suckage comes from one place and one place alone: the fans. And I mean that sincerely. I will only respect those Yankee fans who can produce a birth certificate showing that they were born in the Bronx. The reason why the Bosox or Cubs (or Whitesox I guess) are so great is that their fans are loyal, long-suffering and true. They have suffered. They have persevered. They have endured. Yankee fans, on the other hand, are either fair-weather fans or spoiled or both. I hate even more Yankee "fans" who live in California, have never been to a game, but like the Yankees because they win. You like a team because you have won and lost with them, because your father won and lost with them, because your neighborhood wins and loses with them, because since you were ten you watched them. You don't like a team because of their colors or because they won the World Series last year. If the Yankees don't win the World series for the next 25 years, then I will have more respect for their fans. Disclaimer: I am a Giants fan. By the time the "New York Yankees" came into existence in 1913, the Giants had been playing there for 30 years (but were known for a time as the Gothams). The Reds, Cubs and Braves were in the original National League, formed in 1880 (but the Cubs were called the White Stockings and the Braves were called the Boston Red Stockings (I know, confusing). I think that two out of the top three greatest players played for the Giants: Willie Mays and Barry Bonds. They are playing well even without the best offensive player in baseball. I think I feel most sorry for Phillies phans. They had a 110-year head-start on the Florida Marlins, but they both have won two World Series titles. In fact, the Philadelphia Phillies are the oldest team in American pro sports to have the same name and be in the same town. Edited April 10, 2005 by argent_paladin
