Hey guys! Have any of yall read the book 'Jesus Freaks' by dc Talk? It is a book of stories about martyrs and those who stood up for our Lord. I've had the book for quite a while, but just now finished reading it, and I really liked it. I was just wondering if anyone else had read it before and what you thought. God bless! ^_^

I read some of it, but I don't think it's a Catholic book, is it? I seem to recall some stories which portrayed the Church rather unflatteringly... Besides, my Baptist friend gave it to me when she was trying to convert me.

Yeah... it doesnt portray the Catholic Church very well. SCRIPTURE ONLY FREAKS is what I felt like I was reading....

Nope, its not a Catholic book. And you're right, some of the stories did kind of show certain things in sort of a biased or opinionated, or just obviouly non-Catholic way, but I looked past it because I just loved the theme of the book and the message that it was meant to give. And yeah, it is about martyrs from all different time periods. I thought the book was pretty well put together and it made me realize how many people have died in such terrible ways for our Lord, but they were joyful until death for that very reason...for Christ. Makes me want to always live passionately for God like they did... God bless!

I love what the Little Flower says in her Story of a Soul:
Martyrdom was the dream of my youth and this dream has grown with me within Carmel's cloisters. But here again, I feel that my dream is a folly, for I cannot confine myself to desiring one kind of martyrdom. To satisfy me I need all. Like You, my Adorable Spouse, I would be scourged and crucified. I would die flayed like St. Bartholomew. I would be plunged into boiling oil like St. John; I would undergo all the tortures inflicted upon the martyrs. With St. Agnes and St. Cecelia, I would present my neck to the sword, and like Joan of Arc, my dear sister, I would whisper at the stake Your Name, O Jesus. When thinking of the torments which will be the lot of Christians at the time of Anti-Christ, I feel my heart leap with joy and I would that these torments be reserved for me. Jesus, Jesus, if I wanted to write all my desires, I would have to borrow Your Book of Life, for in it are reported all the actions of all the saints, and I would accomplish all of them for You. O my Jesus! what is your answer to all my follies? Is there a soul more little, more powerless than mine? Nevertheless even because of my weakness, it has pleased You, O Lord, to grant my little childish desires and You desire, today, to grant other desires that are greater than the universe.
Should the word "freak" be used with Jesus?

Date: 1563
1 a : a sudden and odd or seemingly pointless idea or turn of the mind b : a seemingly capricious action or event
2 : archaic : a whimsical quality or disposition
3 : one that is markedly unusual or abnormal: as a : a person or animal with a physical oddity who appears in a circus sideshow b : slang : (1) : a sexual deviate (2) : a person who uses an illicit drug c : HIPPIE d : an atypical postage stamp usually caused by a unique defect in paper (as a crease) or a unique event in the manufacturing process (as a speck of dirt on the plate) that does not produce a constant or systematic effect

Personally, I don't like the use of the word "freak" with Jesus.

It's just a humorous attempt to turn around the labels some people place on Christians as "freaks". It's akin to St. Paul saying he was a fool for Christ. I don't see anything wrong with it.

I owned the good. I thought it was good. Its really encouraging to read about people... so of whom are very young... that gave their lives to Christs... Its not against the Catholic Church per say but some of the martyrs in it were following Martin Luther and were said to be persecuted for their faith (by Catholics, though it doesn't say it... you can tell... i could anyway)

I don't know...I'd just rather read something inspiring that doesn't diss the Church...like the Confessions of St. Augustine...NOW THAT'S GOOD!

I  St. Augustine.

Sorry.

Awesome. ^_^
I was at the library this weekend getting some books for a research project, and while I was looking for books on the computer, I decided to do a quick search for books about saints and different things related to Catholicism. I saw that one about St. Augustine actually. I'm gonna have to go back and check some out next time! :book:

Isn't the book about mostly protestant "martyrs" from the reformation, etc?

demonslayer -- you are most likely right about this book, but like what Sweetpea said, it has gotta be inspiring for Christians either way.
Another book I reccomend, although I haven't finished it yet, is Diary of a Soul by St. Faustina! It's amazing!

I have the book. It's pretty good and you're right that it doesn't always portray the Catholic Church in the best light. (There are some incorrect statements in it too.) But I still think it's beneficial to read as long as the reader knows that ahead of time.
