Ash Wednesday Posted April 23, 2005 Posted April 23, 2005 When I was in Rome, a friend and I noticed how many cats there are around the Eternal City. She had originally thought it would be a neat idea to do a story about an Italian boy in Rome who befriends a cat. (She's a children's book writer and illustrator) Originally the story was to take place by the Palatine, but the recent news articles about Pope Benedict having a soft spot for cats gave me an idea. (For those that don't know, Ratzinger always would stop to pet the cats on the street and they would sometimes try to follow him into his office. One of the Swiss Guards joked about the cats making a seige on the Vatican...) I think it would be neat to still have some adventure with the Roman boy but the cat gets chased by a big mean dog, and so here's the boy trying to find his cat who ran away, and they are running throughout the streets of rome (it would be funny if at some point they go running through the Trevi fountain, tips over gelati or souvenir stands) and the boy somehow ends up running to the Vatican, and eventually in a room where the pope is....one of the officials in the vatican yells at the boy for being so irresponsible and that the pope doesn't have time for such things and of course the boy is horrified and apologetic and starts to cry because he thinks his parents will be so mad! And in the end the pope comes into the room asking what all the noise is about, takes pity on the boy and during a greeting from his apartment window tells the people of Rome to help this boy find his cat. And in the end, the boy finds his cat and a new found friend in the pope, and everyone lives happily ever after. [img]http://www.newsregister.com/photos/upload/20041014160445_medium.jpg[/img]

"On page 7, 'Kitty' runs through Trevi Fountain which was built in 17--" whatever. As a HSM, I love reading these kinds of books to my kids.
