I've read The Ratzinger Report and La Mia Vita (Milestones). Both of those are good. I'm right now looking to get the "follow-up" on the Ratzinger Report.

I'd definitely go for Spirit of the Liturgy. I haven't finished it, but what I've read so far is WAY good! :D

Salt of the Earth is GREAT! Reading it right now...really is a good summary of who he is and where he's coming from. Good answers for non-Catholics, too.

Just started _In the beginning: a Catholic understanding of the story of Creation and the fall_ . It's good! You can tell he was a professor. :)

There's a follow-up to the Ratzinger report!

I just started reading the report two days ago. I just finished the fourth chapter right now and I find it extremely good. I was surprised with the simplicity which Papa Benoit XVI (well, cardinal Ratzinger at the time) used in dealing with the questions. You don't get the feeling that you have to be a cholar of the church in order to understand what he says, and yet, his replies are complete, concise, to the point.

I think (at least thus far) that this book is excellent for people who wish to know more about our new papa, and not just about where he is from, what he knows and his opinions, but also what he is like. I somehow get the feeling of 'over-hearing' the interview while reading the book and thus get an image of Ratzinger - and its a good one.

I just read The Ratzinger Report as well. I'd definitely recommend it. It's an excellent look at the Church, touching on everything from the Liturgy to Marian devotion to the role of Bishops. It's similar to John Paul II's "Crossing the Threshold of Hope", although it's somewhat more extensive. Whereas John Paul II was philosophical and spiritual, Benedict is more dogmatic and practical. It's a good complement.

I've read his memoirs, Milestones, which is a beautiful account of his life (up to 1970). It's very moving. Recently I read Salt of the Earth, which is just incredible. I think everyone should read it because you will come to understand what sort of person this Pope is . . . and I think that you will be pleasantly surprised by him. :) I'm hoping to read Spirit of the Liturgy soon as well.

I've read (and thus FULLY recommend):

"The Spirit of the Liturgy"
"God is Near Us"
"Called to Communion"
"Feast of Faith"
"Behold the Pierced One"
"Gospel, Catechesis, Catechism"

7/22 - St. Mary Magdalene

His first two books (The Meaning of Christian Brotherhood and Introduction to Christianity) are already classics.

Truth and Tolerance is fascinating. Pretty heavy reading. It is kind of an explanatoin of his viewpoints on world religions and philosphies.

I read Milestones not too long ago, which is a good beginning read for Papa Ratzi readers. Salt of the Earth is also especially good. :)

'Many Religions, One Covenant' is also sweet! Hadn't heard it mentioned yet so I thought I'd mention it.

Or 'Introduction to Christianity', an older text.
